JonBenet Ramsey's Dad, Brother Speak: 7 Revelations From A&E's 'The Truth Uncovered' Special

Could this cold case be warming up? Shocking revelations came to light in The Killing of JonBenét: The Truth Uncovered on Monday, September 5, including never-before-seen footage and documents from the nearly 20-year-old case.

Here are seven things we learned from the A&E special about the unsolved December 1996 murder of 6-year-old pageant star JonBenét Ramsey. (The grisly crime is getting the full television true-crime treatment of late, including an in-the-works Lifetime movie, a CBS docuseries debuting Sunday, September 18, and an Investigation Discovery airing Monday, September 12.)

    1. John Ramsey Still Maintains His Family’s Innocence

JonBenét's father, John Ramsey — who is remarried and now the owner of a small flight-chartering business — ardently maintained his family's innocence throughout the documentary: “Twenty years later, there’s still people who believe I killed JonBenét.” John, 72, continued, "These accusations are wrong, and they are abhorrent." (JonBenét’s mother, Patsy Ramsey, who faced similar accusations until both she and John were officially removed from the suspect list in 2008, passed away from ovarian cancer in 2006.)

    2. Unaired Interview Footage of Burke Ramsey, JonBenét’s Brother

The special featured interview footage never previously made public of a 9-year-old Burke Ramsey, JonBenét’s brother, shortly after the crime was committed. The young boy could hardly sit still in his chair as the investigator asked him simple questions about his younger sister’s murder. When asked why he never left his bedroom while JonBenét was missing, a timid young Burke responded chillingly, “Because I was just so scared.”

Burke — once thought of as a potential suspect by author James Kollar, a former investigator on the case — was exonerated by DNA evidence in 1999. Of the accusations against his son, John Ramsey told the camera, “The accusation that Burke is some violent 90-pound, 9-year-old-child … is laughable. I’m sorry — I can’t think of a better word. It’s absurd.”

    3. Incorrect Information Was Leaked to the Press

Author Paula Woodward spoke out in the documentary about the incorrect and damning information that was leaked to the press, causing the tabloid frenzy of accusations against Patsy and John Ramsey. She stated, “Not a single leak was true: There was no snow around the house. No handwriting expert has ever concluded that Patsy wrote the [ransom] notes. John didn’t leave the home that evening, nor was any porn found.”

    4. The Stun Gun Revelation

For the documentary, A&E enlisted a team of investigators to examine past evidence, including a key piece: the possible use of a stun gun. Many have argued that if JonBenét’s mysterious wounds on her face and back are the result of a stun gun, it would rule out the parents as suspects. Previously, some investigators argued that the wounds could have been caused by the brother’s railroad toy and not a stun gun. Expert Stewart Hamilton declared that it couldn’t have been caused by a railroad toy, saying, “Highly unlikely. … It’s a lot bigger than the train track marks. Frankly, it borders on fanciful.”

    5. An Unidentified Male Is Implicated

The DNA of an unidentified man was found on JonBenét in two separate locations, another piece of evidence that rules out JonBenét’s parents as suspects. Forensic scientist Lawrence Kobalinsky told the camera, “I think that the unescapable conclusion is that an unidentified male committed this crime. As soon as there’s a hit, he will be nailed, and that solves the crime.”

    6. List of Suspects Has Been Narrowed Down to "50 or 60" People

Detective Lou Smit, who performed extensive research on the case over the course of decades, passed away in 2010 of colon cancer. His daughter told the camera, “Lou was working this case up until the day he died. … He was very concerned that it was going to die with him.” She continued, “He started doing a lot of the investigation on his own. … But his frustration there was that he had absolutely no investigative powers at all.”

The documentary revealed that among his data is a spreadsheet that has a list of 50 or 60 suspects. His daughter added, “We hope that a law enforcement agency will be able to pick up where my dad left off.”

    7. DNA Technology Could Solve the Case

DNA expert Richard Eikelenboom shed some light on how modern, more-advanced DNA technology might help crack the case. Eikelenboom said to the camera, “What you could do is look for people related to this person.” He then continued to imply that, based on his investigation, the DNA of the unidentified male may not be "from a Caucasian background."

^^^ Saw it. Best documentary I've seen on the subject.

i never thought the parents or the son did it.

I agree. He was essentially an only child, or at least the only child growing up in a home filled with sadness, sickness, grief and death. Not to mention suspicion and accusations. It couldn't have been easy.

I'm watching the Today show and they're doing a story on the interview; they're showing excerpts of the interview, and it just seems a little odd to me that he is smiling the whole time he is recounting the story of what happened that night...

Smiling at inappropriate times can be a symptom of social anxiety or a range of others things.

Given that others mentioned he might be on the spectrum, I wondered if it had anything to do with that; having a big smile on your face as you describe your panicked mom coming into your room looking for your missing sister just seemed off...

I saw some snippets of the interview, he talks about staying in his bed for hours that morningbecause it was "safe". Jon Benet would sleep in his bed with him at times because that made her feel safe.

WTF was going on in that house that the kids basically hid out in bed? JB was a bed wetter and Patsy a perfectionist. Rage issues and taking it out on the kids, maybe?

Did anyone watch this? I didn't, but I guess they openly accused Burke of the murder...

Burke Ramsey's Lawyer Plans to Sue CBS Over JonBenét Docu-Series: "He Will Be Haunted by These Accusations"

by SAMANTHA SCHNURR | Wed, Sep 21, 2016 2:06 PM

Burke Ramsey is not taking CBS' accusations lightly.

On the heels of the finale episode of the network's docuseries, The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey, the 29-year-old's attorney, L. Lin Wood, has announced plans to sue CBS and one of the show's experts, Dr. Werner Spitz, on behalf of his longtime client.

"CBS doesn't have enough money to compensate this man for the permanent damage they have caused this man's reputation that he has to live with for the rest of his life," he told E! News. "When I am done with CBS, the verdict from the Hulk Hogan vs. Gawker case is going to look like peanuts."

During Monday night's airing, the series concluded by proposing a new theory that, instead of the original hypothesis that an intruder had killed 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey in her home in Colorado, a 9-year-old Burke had actually struck his sister on the head with a flashlight and accidentally killed her despite the fact that the entire Ramsey family had been publicly exonerated in 2008 by the Boulder district attorney based on evidence.

It's a largely publicized theory that Wood claims will have a lifetime effect on his client. "Now, from age 29 until he takes his last breath, he will be haunted by these accusations the network has put out," the attorney told E! News.

"There is no new investigation," Wood continued to E! News. "This was a show [to] produce ratings and money like [The People v. O.J. Simpson] and Netflix's Making a Murderer. They are putting this out for September sweeps. The 20th anniversary is in December, not September."

Wood also takes issue with the show's panel of experts, whom he claimed to E! are working off of a script from a book written by James Kolar called Foreign Faction: Who Really Kidnapped JonBenét?

"The accusations of the CBS so-called "experts" lack substantial evidentiary support and contradict the factual conclusions reached by legitimate law enforcement authorities and experts familiar with the actual evidence developed in the case. CBS' false and unprofessional attacks on this young man are disgusting and revolting," he continued in his statement.

"Burke Ramsey shall seek redress against CBS for its outrageous accusations in a court of law where he successfully acquitted himself over 15 years ago in libel actions filed against the tabloid Star Magazine, the New York Post and Court TV for publishing similar false accusations."

In response to Wood's recent statements, CBS said it "stands by the broadcast and will do so in court."

So was there new evidence in the final episode that the brother did it?

I really want to see this now.

The CBS special is worth watching, they were as thorough as they could be within a time constraint.

I watched it. Outraged by a lot of it. How cops were told to not investigate certain things, the grand jury recommended trial for the Ramsey's and the DA didn't prosecute. They also played burkes interview videoes. They were creepy. The experts concluded the most likely explanation was that Burke hit jonbenet on the head with a flashlight, either accidentally or with intent, which he demonstrated in the video, and John and patsy covered it up. Truthfully, I came to that conclusion a long time ago. I always knew there was a cover up, and concluded the only reason to cover up the death of their revered daughter was to save one of their own, hence Burke.

Admittedly, I know very little about this case. I've read threads on here, but don't follow it and I didn't watch the documentary. I did read comments on another site regarding the Burke theory. The biggest red flags were that the DNA on Jon Benet didn't match her family. Also, wasn't there some sign of sexual trauma? Would parents trying to cover up a crime really do that to their child? Also, the manner (garrote) in which she was killed was really violent, again, would a parent really do that to their dead child just to "save" another child?
