I would imagine that it's somewhat similar to how they measure air quality or pollutants in the air. I guess the trick would be in the collection method. I'm certainly no scientist but those are the legal issues I would see.

OSHA has instructions and specifies equipment and methods for collecting air samples at work sites. In those cases, though, it appears that a pump is used and air is actually drawn through a series of filters, allowing you to detect stuff like cadmium, copper, cobalt, etc.

In this case, someone just seemed to have opened up a can and left it in the boot of the car for a while and then put a lid on it. I'm not sure what type of analysis was performed after that. Supposedly, human decomposition results in gases like methane, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia. Did the body farm guy have a gas chromotographer/spectrometer to detect this stuff?

Update: I found a site that stated that Vass did use gas chromatography on carpet samples from the car to determine elevated chloroform levels. Not sure about human decomposition, though.

Thanks for the insight, it's pretty amazing that they can test air like that.

I can't find the trial anywhere on tv. Is anyone watching it, and if so where?

Meryl doesn't even try anymore. She just calls Lanvin and asks for curtains with a belt.~Bitter
Can we interest you in Leann Rimes? She has a nice little cadre of fans you'd probably enjoy.~ Pecan Pie

Holy smoke - I just saw this today regarding Baez (I snipped the beginning of the article out):

Casey Anthony Trial: Who Is Defense Attorney Jose Baez? - ABC News

    By JESSICA HOPPER
    June 8, 2011

It has taken a while for Baez to establish himself as a defense lawyer. Despite graduating from law school in 1997, the Navy veteran was denied admission to the Florida bar for eight years until 2005.
An order by the Supreme Court of Florida states that he was denied admission because of his failure to pay child support to his ex-wife and secure life and health insurance for his teenage daughter. It states that he had previously declared bankruptcy, written bad checks and defaulted on student loans, the court said.

The Florida Supreme Court said his financial mishaps coupled with failure to pay child support "show a lack of respect for the rights of others and a total lack of respect for the legal system, which is absolutely inconsistent with the character and fitness qualities required of those seeking to be afforded the highest position of trust and confidence recognized by our system of law."

Baez declined several requests by ABC News to comment on this story.

Is this Baez guy privately retained or a court appointed attorney? I'm sure it's been said in this thread already but basically I'm too lazy to search for it.

Privately retained. Also, I think that he is being paid for partly out of the $200K that ABC gave Casey for sitting down in an interview with them.

^ Did that interview ever happen?

I think Baez also took this case because of the fame around it.

From 9-3pm, it's on TruTV (formerly Court TV)
3-End of court day, HLN, Headline News-CNN

Today was busy for me so I missed all of today's testimonies. Just catching the end now.

From what I've read, she retained him when she was first in jail on the child endangerment charges, based on recommendations of other inmates who were in lockup with her. Probably crack whores.

She was able to pay him with money she received from a tv network for Caylee's pictures (allegedly over $200k) but they claim that money's gone and Casey was declared indigent so now the State is paying his fees.

I watched at home last week & it was on HLN. TruTv had some of it but HLN is pretty much nothing but Casey Trial.

Does anyone know if Leonard Padilla was subpoenaed by either side? Can a defendant choose to be sedated or medicated, during their trial, b/c of stress?

eta: read or saw on chat board..that the computer specialist (the guy) said he found 84 searches (or someone searched 84 different times) for chloroform.

Re: Baez's shadiness: If she's convicted, could Casey file an appeal based on incompetent representation? Could a good lawyer get her a new trial based on Baez's douche-fail?
