I still don't think she was necessarily involved no matter how you define it. He could have fallen accidentally with no other person's involvement. I'd love to know what the police think of the conditions surrounding the incident.

There have been so many deadly domestic violence cases in San Diego in the last 2 or 3 months. Isn't this the 5th or 6th? These murder/suicides are rampant. I read about a man last month who killed himself, his wife and 2 or 3 of their teenage kids in the eastern part of San Diego county. Their bodies were found in their pool, floating. In fact, this morning they found the body of a San Diego Police Officer detective. Apparently her son murdered her and her daughter (his sister). I should post that one in a separate thread. Here's that story:

Jonah Shacknai released a statement with his ex-wife Dina Romano announcing that their son Max (known to friends and family as Maxie) died in the hospital Sunday.

Last week, the 6-year old son of the millionaire Medicis Pharmaceuticals CEO sustained critical injuries after falling down the stairs in Shacknai's Coronado mansion, known as Spreckles Mansion - the same home where Shacknai's 32-year old girlfriend was found dead on Wednesday, hanging from a rope dangling over a courtyard.

Max Shacknai was not responsive when the paramedics arrived on Monday. The boy "had fallen from stairs and was not breathing and did not have a pulse," Coronado Police Chief Louis Scanlon said Thursday.

It is unclear whether Max ever regained consciousness in the time he was hospitalized.

Here is the full statement, which was released on Sunday night:

With great sadness, Dina and I convey the tragic passing of our beloved son, Max (affectionately known as Maxie).* Despite heroic efforts on the part of paramedics and hospital staff, he was unable to recover from the injuries suffered early last week.* His loving, kind and vibrant spirit will forever be in our hearts and those whom he touched every day. The loss to our families, Max's many friends of all ages and teammates, and the community is immeasurable.

We appreciate your respecting the privacy of our families during this time of grieving for Max.* A private memorial service is being planned.

Memorial contributions honoring Max may be made to Whispering Hope Ranch Foundation either by mail to 9045 E. Pima Center Parkway, Scottsdale, AZ 85258, or via their web site, Whispering Hope Ranch Foundation (WHRF).

On behalf of Dina, myself and our families, please know of our appreciation for the tremendous outpouring of support provided during this very difficult time.

The announcent came after law enforcement officials denied on Sunday that Max had died earlier in the weekend.

On Saturday, multiple media outlets quoted a Facebook message posted by Max's older sister Gabriele, indicating that her brother had died.

"RIP Maxie. We'll miss your sweet smile and kind heart more than you'll ever know. I'll love you forever," San Diego's Channel 8 news reported the message read.*

IBTimes was not able to locate the message on Facebook today; and it appears that Gabriele Shacknai's profile may have been removed altogether.

Coronado police spokesperson Lea Corbin told The Arizona Republic that there does not appear to be any connection between Max Shaknai's injury and the bizarre death of Jonah Shacknai's girlfriend, Rebecca Nalepa (also known as Rebecca Zahau).

"It just seems to be a tragic accident," she said.

Rebecca Nalepa's dead body was found nude, bound, and hanging from the mansion's balcony on Wednesday.

Jonah's brother Adam Shacknai made the discovery, and told police that he cut Nalepa down after finding her. Both her ankles and wrists were bound.

"This is a very bizarre death, there's no doubt about it," San Diego Sheriff's Capt. Tim Curran told reporters.

"There are some very unique ways" people can take their own lives, Curran added. "If it was determined to be a suicide, people will do some very bizarre things."

Mary Zahau-Loehner spoke to ABC News about her sister Rebecca's state of mind before the gruesome discovery, saying that when the sisters spoke on Tuesday night, things with Rebecca did not seem out of the ordinary.

"She was normal, fine, just getting ready to go to bed," Zahau-Loehner said.

A San Diego kennel owner who spoke to Nalepa on Tuesday said the woman was shaken by the recent events at her home.

It is believed that Jonah Shacknai was not home during his son's injury nor when Rebecca's body was found, and there have been reports that Rebecca was his designated caretaker at the time of the fatal injury.

Shacknai and Nalepa had been dating for two years.

There has been no explanation yet from the medical examiner's office about how Nalepa might have hung herself while her wrists and ankles were bound; nor has there been any information disclosed about the material used to bind them.

Land records show that Shacknai, 54, whose Scottsdale, Arizona-based company is the maker of the acne treatment Solodyn and wrinkle-filler Restylane, purchased the 27-room landmark property known as the Spreckels Mansion in October 2010.

From 1977 to 1982, Shacknai served as chief aide to the House of Representatives committee with responsibility for health policy, and in other senior legislative positions, according to a bio on Forbes.

He was also a member of the Commission on the Federal Drug Approval Process, and the National Council on Drugs.

On Thursday, Medicis had its sharpest decline in stock price since February.

Police have sealed all evidence related to the case, including search warrants and Nalepa's autopsy report.

I think the boyfriend was pissed at her for his son's accident and killed her. Or he was pissed about something and killed them both. Or the brother did it. Or someone did it.

Shit, I should be on CSI.

I want to see some factual reports. I have read she was tied with hands behind her then I read she was not tied but had restraints on her wrists and legs...

Mysterious deaths in Coronado puzzle investigators

The 6-year-old son of a pharmaceutical executive died Sunday after a fall at the historic Spreckels mansion. His father's girlfriend's body was found hanging Wednesday from a balcony at the home.
By Tony Perry, Los Angeles Times July 19, 2011
    Reporting from San Diego—

The mysterious deaths of a 6-year-old boy and his father's girlfriend within the same week in wealthy Coronado, Calif., have left police puzzled, with one investigator saying that scientific evidence in the woman's death at the historic Spreckels mansion would ultimately determine what happened.

On Sunday, the mansion's owner, pharmaceutical executive Jonah Shacknai, announced that his son, Max, had died. The boy had been taken to the hospital six days earlier after falling down the grand staircase at the Ocean Boulevard mansion built in 1908.

The naked body of Shacknai's girlfriend, Rebecca Nalepa, 32, was found July 13 hanging by her neck from a balcony in the courtyard of the 27-room estate. Her hands and feet were bound.

Shacknai's brother, Adam, a guest at the home, told investigators that he found Nalepa and cut her down in hopes that she was still alive. The two were the only ones in the house at the time.

The lead investigator called the circumstances "bizarre" and declined to classify the death as a suicide or "a criminal incident."

As for the fatal fall of Max Shacknai, detectives would only say that they have found no direct connection between his death and that of Nalepa.

"Right now, we're treating it as an accident," a Coronado Police Department spokeswoman said.

No arrests have been made and no suspects identified in Nalepa's death.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating Nalepa's death because the Coronado Police Department does not have its own homicide unit.

Coronado, with a population of about 24,000, sits across the bay from San Diego and is best known for its Navy bases and swanky beachfront hotels.

After he fell, Max Shacknai was rushed to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where his father and mother — Jonah Shacknai's ex-wife, Dina, who also lives in Coronado — kept a vigil.

On Sunday, Shacknai announced the boy's death via email.

"His loving, kind and vibrant spirit will forever be in our hearts and those whom he touched every day," Jonah Shacknai's email said. "The loss to our families, Max's many friends of all ages, and teammates, and the community is immeasurable."

Meanwhile, the San Diego County medical examiner has sealed the results of an autopsy on Nalepa, also known by her maiden name, Rebecca Zahau. A certified ophthalmic technician, she left her job in Scottsdale, Ariz., last year to spend more time with Shacknai and his children, authorities said.

Investigators are interviewing people about Nalepa's final days.

"I think this is one of those cases where the forensics will determine the case," said Sgt. Roy Frank of the sheriff's homicide unit.

Investigators declined to say where Jonah Shacknai, 54, was when Nalepa's body was found.

"We've spoken to Jonah and other members of the family," Frank said. "Everybody has been completely cooperative."

Within hours of the discovery of Nalepa's body — as news helicopters circled overhead — attorney Paul Pfingst, former two-term district attorney, now one of the region's top criminal defense attorneys, showed up at the mansion. Pfingst would only say that he's been hired to represent someone in the case.

In announcing the death of his son, Jonah Shacknai suggested memorial contributions be made to the Whispering Hope Ranch Foundation in Scottsdale. Shacknai has served as president and director of the foundation, which helps special-needs children.

Shacknai, a lawyer, was once a top congressional aide involved with health issues. His hugely successful company, Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp., which he founded in 1988, is headquartered in Scottsdale. The company markets acne and anti-wrinkle treatments Restylane and Dysport, a competitor to Botox, in the United States, Canada and Europe.

The family splits its time between Scottsdale and the Coronado mansion, which was built in 1908 by sugar baron and philanthropist John D. Spreckels, who once owned the Hotel del Coronado and San Diego's newspapers. The oceanfront house is listed as a national historic site.

In his Sunday email, Shacknai asked reporters to respect "the privacy of our families during this time of grieving for Max."

so declining that it is suicide or criminal, and what is left? Natural causes? When only two people are in the house at the time? The lawyer won't say who he is representing, but of the two people in the house supposedly at the time, only one is living. wtf?

^ They're declining to classify which it is out of suicide or criminal incident. It doesn't mean it's anything else, just that they don't know yet so don't want to say.

Will Lab Tests Solve Mystery of Millionaire's Mansion Deaths?

As the investigation continues into the mysterious deaths of Jonah Shacknai's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, and his son, Max, questions remain about what really happened inside the millionaire's mansion near San Diego.

On July 13, Zahau, 32, was found hanging from a makeshift noose with her arms bound behind her back and her legs also tied. Max, 6, succumbed to his injuries several days later, after an accidental fall from a staircase in the home.

Here are some of the burning questions about the case Ė and what is known so far:

    1. Was Rebecca's death a murder or suicide?

That's yet to be determined, pending forensic test results which are still weeks away. "Usually the forensics will solve these types of mysteries," says Sgt. Roy Frank of the San Diego Sheriff's homicide unit. "We don't believe [her death] was accidental. So we're down to suicide or homicide, which at times can look very similar."

    2. What will those tests reveal?

Any foreign DNA on her body, fingerprints, any drugs in her system, or signs of trauma.

    3. Was she suicidal?

Rebecca's older sister Mary Zahau-Loehner has strongly denied her sister was suicidal or depressed following Max's accident. Ted Greenberg, a dog daycare service owner who saw Rebecca one day before she died, adds, "There were no signs of her being erratic."

    4. Does Rebecca's family blame Jonah for her death?

So far, it appears no. "Jonah was very devoted to Rebecca," said her brother-in-law, Doug Loehner, shortly after her death. "She treated his kids as her own." And a Zahau family statement added: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jonah and the Shacknai family on the loss of their son Max." Jonah also attended Rebecca's funeral on Saturday and sat with her family.

    5. Do police suspect Jonah or his brother Adam, who found Rebecca's hanging body? What about Max's mother, Dina?

"We have no suspects or persons of interest at this time," says Sgt. Frank, who adds that all three have been cooperative. "We are checking the consistency of everyone's statements. That includes anyone associated with the [mansion]. We are keeping an open mind and not jumping to any conclusions."

Wow. I would think that a day after the death of a six-year-old who she treated as if her own -- and died while in her sole care -- that she would be at least a LITTLE depressed.
