No, I wondered that, too. Poor thing!

I can't find a recent article about this case, but here's one from 2009 giving some background on the story. (Videos are at the link.)

Trio Who Disappeared After Friend's Murder Still Missing, Three Years Later

    BY NEWS STAFF
    POSTED AUG 14, 2009 9:57 AM EDT

Three teens who disappeared after their friend was murdered are still missing, three years after the body of Philip Sit was found in a wooded area in York Region.
Yee Wah ‘Eve’ Ho (pictured), her boyfriend Jackie Li and Kevin Lim simply vanished following the August 2006 discovery.
Sit had been missing since September 2005.
However, officers say that the trio is not considered suspects.
On Friday, Toronto Police released a series of video appeals for any information in the case.
Back in 2007, Cst. Scott Mills admitted investigators were stymied.
“We’ve either got foul play, or I would like to look on the hopeful side that, for one reason or another, they’re scared, they’re hiding.
    “We don’t know.”
Ho, who was 17 at the time of her disappearance, last spoke to her best friend when the two arranged to meet up at the Eaton Centre. Eva never showed up for the meeting.
Li, also 17 at the time, was last seen by his mother when she left their Scarborough apartment to go to work in the morning. He spoke to his mom on the phone later that day. That was the last she heard of him.
Lim, 18, was last seen at his Scarborough home by his grandmother. He told her he was going to the store to buy a drink.
If you can help, call the Missing Persons Coordinator line, 416-808-4157 or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous 416-222-TIPS (8477). You can also text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).

According to the video, the families are very camera shy (and there is a language barrier), though they've cooperated with police. I think maybe the kids saw or knew something they weren't supposed to, but if they were scared and ran away I still think it would bizarre they could do that without leaving any clues to family or friends.

Police “Very Close” to Answers in the Lyon Sisters’ Disappearance (VIDEO)

    by Krista Brick
As investigators search a property in Bedford County, Va. looking for the Lyon sisters missing from Montgomery County for nearly 40 years, Montgomery County Police Capt. Darren Francke talks about the case in this MyMCMedia Extra.
Francke said police are getting “very, very close” to finding answers in the case of Katherine and Sheila Lyon’s disappearance.

Second person of interest named in Lyon sisters case

Richard Welch Sr., the uncle of Lloyd Lee Welch, was named a person of interest Thursday

Richard Allen Welch Sr., the uncle of Lloyd Lee Welch, has been named a person of interest. Lloyd Lee Welch was previously named a person of interest.
Richard Allen Welch Sr. may have been a security guard at the Washington D.C.-area mall where the Lyon sisters disappeared from in 1975, investigators say.
"We need people to come forward and do the right thing to bring closure to this matter," said Russ Hamill, Assistant Chief of the Montgomery County (Maryland) Police Department.
Following up on a lead, investigators have been searching Taylor's Mountain in the Thaxton area of Bedford County for several days. Hamill said he thinks "there is a good chance" the girls are on the mountain.
Richard Allen Welch Sr. is in his 70s, but investigators would not say where he lives. Hamill said there are people out there who have information about the case, and have been living with it for nearly 40 years.

42 years after young Md. sisters vanished, man pleads guilty in case that stunned D.C. region

BEDFORD, VA. – A sex offender accused in the 1975 abduction of sisters Katherine and Sheila Lyon from a Maryland shopping mall pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree felony murder on Tuesday morning — answering some but not all of the lingering questions in one of the Washington region’s most painful mysteries.
Wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit, Lloyd Lee Welch, 60, stood before a judge and admitted he participated in the abduction of the sisters, ages 10 and 12, who were last seen at Wheaton Plaza Mall where they’d gone to have lunch, see friends and look at Easter decorations.
“I plead guilty to felony first-degree murder,” Welch said for each of the two counts.
Welch did not admit to directly killing either girl but he was held accountable for their deaths under a felony murder doctrine for killings “in the commission of abduction with intent to defile.”
Welch received a sentence of 48 years in prison, as part of an earlier agreement with prosecutors. Given his age, and the fact he still must finish a prison sentence in Delaware for the unrelated sexual assault of a 10-year-old, it is unlikely Welch will ever be released. He was prosecuted in the Lyon sisters case in Bedford County – some 200 miles southwest of Washington – because authorities established that the remains of at least one of the girls may have been buried there.
