Really? Where did anyone advocate child abuse? I just stated I don't think the hot sauce in the mouth qualified. Oh well, whatever, we're all aware of that little virgin freak's reading comprehension issues.

and I do think it is as it is administered in this case but I agree on the lack of reading comprehension.

I love it that they were banned and still come here to read. You also have to question the intelligence of someone who would go to a site about the Dream Act to post links to a gossip website.

Kid in the video is almost certainly a kid with reactive attachment disorder, and holding him down like that & putting hot sauce in his mouth is one of the worst things she could do. They're intensely uncomfortable with closeness and intimacy unless it's totally on their terms or superficial. She's teaching him that closeness comes with fear and pain.

One of the things that highly trained foster parents do with rad kids is scoop them up and hold them (no matter how old they are, even if they struggle) and work on eye contact & they pop candy in their mouths. It's like what you do with newborns when they learn to bond - hold them, gaze at them, give them milk (sweet).

This woman is out of her league with this kid. She needs serious intervention.

^^Lobes there is a lot of controversy with the holding treatment for these kids too. I have to instruct foster parents that it is against the rules. A few kids have died in "holds". It is rare to find fosters who are trained for this too.

The agencies handling these adoptions fail on many levels. The parents are ill equipped to handle the baggage these kids bring.

I know the kinds of holds you're talking about - those are different. The ones I'm talking about are the type that Nancy Thomas does. Quick - in & out, let 'em go. No holding DOWN. Just holding and done.

Any type of punishment when used in extremes is abuse.

I have to admit that my reading of your (Lobes') post and my understanding of what we call "pin down" (where kids & I think disabled adults have died) were two different things. The former was for what I can only describe of with my limited vocabularly as "a quick cuddle & reward" for socialisation & to learn that not all contact is bad where as the latter is to do with punishment & allegedly to "calm" people.

There was a show on 60 minutes about twin girls adopted from Russia who had RAD. The parents had a nightmare time of it. The girls looked like angels but had severe emotional problems. They would act out by stealing, destroying property, setting fires etc. The parents were kind and loving, but totally out of their element. They turned to psychologists who specialized with RAD children. One of the things you mention, holding, was something they did.

I'd be interested to see how they turned out. I think many adopting parents don't realize what they're in for with some of the kids who have suffered emotional trauma in the orphanage.

^^^You're exactly right - people have no earthly idea what they're in for. Sluce is right about very few foster parents being appropriately trained to deal with them. Treating RAD kids often goes against instinct & "common sense" in regard to parenting. What works with normal children does NOT work with these, and what this woman did (if the kid is in fact RAD) is training him to continue to distrust people, which results in more acting out, etc.

And Novice, you're right, the kind of hold I'm talking about doesn't involve a lot of time or struggling. It's like when your old auntie used to grab the nieces and nephews and squeeze them & coo whether they liked it or not

Another issue is that here in the States when you adopt a child from the foster system the law allows you to have access to their records. You know what type of abuse the child has suffered, what happened to the family of origin, etc. The system also allows financial aid to pay for mental health services if the family can't afford it on their own. When you adopt from a foreign country you do not get those records. Too often there are illegal baby brokers acting as the go between for a fee. They are selling a commodity and will tell you whatever you need to hear. The parents have struggled with years of sadness in trying to become a family and overlook warning signs. It is a recipe for disaster.

Wouldn't what this woman is doing cause distrust and acting out even if the child didn't have the orphanage background? Perhaps not on the same scale.

The boy is clearly scared of his mother. That's not respect, that's fear. I will never understand this kind of cruelty.
