Default Family Held Hostage by Taliban for Five Years Released

Have you guys heard about this? I am so perplexed by this story. Apparently, they went backpacking in Afghanistan when his wife was 7 months pregnant. They've had 3 more children in captivity. One was killed by their captors. So, my questions... why in the world would you go backpacking in Afghanistan when you are 7 months pregnant? Why would you continue to have sex when you are being held hostage? Isn't that sort of the last thing on your mind? Very curious.

This is from Good Morning America:

After being held hostage for five years by a Taliban-affiliated terrorist network in the mountains of Afghanistan, a Canadian man, his American wife and their three children born in captivity arrived in Toronto Friday night.

Joshua Boyle -- who arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport with his wife Caitlan Coleman and their children -- told reporters inside the Air Canada terminal that the Haqqani network killed a fourth child born in captivity, an infant daughter, and raped his wife.

"The stupidity and the evil of the Haqqani networks, kidnapping of a pilgrim and his heavily pregnant wife engaged in helping ordinary villagers in Taliban-controlled regions of Afghanistan was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorizing the murder of my infant daughter, Martyr Boyle," Boyle said, revealing the murder of his daughter.

He added, revealing the rape of his wife, "As retaliation of the repeated refusal to accept an offer that the criminal miscreants of the Haqqani had made to me. And the stupidity and evil of the subsequent rape of my wife, not as the lone action of one guard, but assisted by the captain of the guards and the commandant."

Speaking about the couple's children, Boyle said, "Obviously it would be of incredible importance to my family that we are able to build a secure sanctuary for our 3 surviving children to call a home, to focus on edification," Boyle told reporters. "And to try to regain of the childhood that they had lost."

The Government of Canada issued the following statement on the arrival of Joshua Boyle, his wife Caitlan Coleman and their children at Toronto's Pearson International Airport: "Today, we join the Boyle family in rejoicing over the long-awaited return to Canada of their loved ones. Canada has been actively engaged on Mr. Boyle’s case at all levels, and we will continue to support him and his family now that they have returned."

The couple and their children were rescued in a dramatic operation orchestrated by the U.S. and Pakistani governments, officials said Thursday.

The couple were abducted in October 2012 while in Afghanistan as part of a brief backpacking trip and held by the Haqqani network, which has ties to the Taliban and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Coleman was pregnant at the time.

The operation came after years of U.S. pressure on Pakistan for assistance. It unfolded quickly and included what some described as a shootout and a dangerous raid. U.S. officials did not confirm the details.

The family arrived in Toronto after flying from Islamabad, Pakistan, with a stopover in London. The family was seated in business class next to U.S. State Department officials.

An Associated Press reporter on the flight was given a handwritten statement by Boyle which read, "God has given me and my family unparalleled resilience and determination, and to allow that to stagnate, to pursue personal pleasure or comfort while there is still deliberate and organized injustice in the world would be a betrayal of all I believe, and tantamount to sacrilege."

Boyle also expressed his displeasure with U.S. foreign policy by gesturing to one of the U.S. State Department officials and saying, "Their interests are not my interests."

Boyle said one of his children is suffering from health issues and needed to be force-fed by rescuers.

They made 3 children while being held captive? Hiking while 7 months pregnant? In Afghanistan? Yes, I have the same questions. It doesn't make sense.

Yeah the Taliban are stupid, but you already knew that before you took your heavily pregnant wife there, you fucking imbecile.

All you really suffered were 5 years of having to listen to religious idiots and having to live in a less than hospitable environment. It was YOUR WIFE who suffered rape because of your fucking ego*, it was YOUR WIFE who had to give birth to all those children in the fucking wilderness, it was YOUR CHILD who was murdered, YOUR CHILDREN who suffered along with YOUR WIFE.

NOT YOU. YOUR EGO is the fucking problem.

I hope his wife realizes what a worthless arsehole he is and gets away from him ASAP.

    * As is usually the case and I'm sure it was here, the Taliban made him an "offer" to convert to Islam for better treatment, earlier release, some other arrangement to make shit easier on himself and his family. Usually, the man isn't a complete and total fuckwit and "converts" (pretends to) just to get those concessions back. This guy refused, because he's an egomanical moron, and his FAMILY paid the price for it.

sorry, maybe because of the stupid hw case, but I don't think it's fair to victim blame. The Taliban should not be excused for kidnapping, rape, and murder, all because the victims they chose were easy targets.

Where do you get that anyone is excusing the Taliban or blaming the victims? I'm happy to point out what the REST of the stupidity is.

I mean look at this shit again:

So why can't I comment on his stupidity?

The guy clearly puts himself and his own ego before his family anyway. Why on Earth would you make your wife have 3 more of your children in that situation? Then refuse a stupid request (convert to Islam) 'repeatedly' and then because your ego is more important than you wife, she gets raped. Then to garner sympathy for YOURSELF, you bring it up as "see how bad they are?" instead of even saying, not even once, "yeah I fucked up and my family paid the price".

So yes, the Taliban are evil fucking misogynistic arseholes and for sure, it's fucked to go kidnapping people, but this guy man. I fucking hate this guy and as I said, I feel terrible for his family for having to go through that, and for having to put up with his worthless arse.

I mean he named his infant Martyr. Really?

And he turned down a ride by US (via aircaft), too, once they had rescued him. Because why get your family out of hell as quickly as possible. Better to make some principled stand (no one know wtf it is) at a time like that.

"Pilgrims"? And the "stupidity and evil" on repeat sounds like some weird cult-y mantra. I would really love to know the whole story of why these people were there in the first place.

Having said that, I'm glad they're safe, especially the wife and kids.

There is an even weirder background to the story beyond this. The reason he didn't take the American plane back was because he wanted to avoid questions by the Americans. He had previously been married to the sister of a Guantanamo prisoner. Daily Mail said they had Al Qaeda links. Not sure about that part, but this guy Boyle sounds like a real prizewinner.

I'd really like to know more about this story. Did they go over to join Al-Qaeda and got involved with this "stupid and evil" mob instead? Because the way he speaks about them is just bizarre.

He denies the story about turning down the ride. Who knows.

Interesting. That's the first time I've heard that. It's almost like trying to figure out what happened in the Vegas hotel.

It's weird because the day (or day after?) they were rescued, I was listening to NPR reporting on it and NPR said for some unknown reason the family had not yet left Pakistan (don't quote me but I think that's where they were taken). And the reporter kind of highlighted how odd that was and no one knew why the US plane that was there, had not taken off. I think they even asked the military person announcing the rescue and he punted the question.

It stuck with me because I worried there was going to be some conflict and they wouldn't get out.

So he can deny he refused the ride all he wants, something weird happened.

I'm reading the Reddit thread on this topic right now and they mentioned he also keeps calling Afghanistan by the name the Taliban gave it, not the current official name. They also pointed out that this random guy has been in direct contact with three terrorist organizations(AL Qaida, Taliban, and Haqqani). And of course turning down a private flight in favor of a commercial flight because the private one would land in the US is shady as hell.

That was my thought too, but they mentioned she was repeatedly raped, so maybe the children are not his.
