Jacob Wetterling’s Remains Found 27 Years After He Was Kidnapped

    By Joyce Chen

Jacob Wetterling’s remains were discovered in Minnesota recently, 27 years after he was kidnapped as an 11-year-old, authorities told The Associated Press on Saturday, September 3. Specifics of when and where the remains were discovered weren’t disclosed due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

According to the AP, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement that “Jacob Wetterling’s remains have been located,” and the Ramsey County medical examiner and a forensic odontologist identified them Saturday.

A law enforcement official told the AP that a person of interest led authorities to a field in central Minnesota last week, which is where they eventually found the remains and other evidence.

“We are in deep grief,” a statement on the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center site reads. “We didn’t want Jacob’s story to end this way. In this moment of pain and shock, we go back to the beginning. The Wetterlings had a choice to walk into bitterness and anger or to walk into a light of what could be, a light of hope. Their choice changed the world.”

The Wetterling family started the resource center in Jacob’s honor to help prevent the exploitation of other children; Jacob’s 1989 abduction led to the passing of a 1994 law that requires states to establish sex offender registries. The story made headlines for shattering the image of relative innocence surrounding suburban Minnesota life at the time.

“Our hearts are broken,” Jacob’s mother Patty texted to KARE-TV on Saturday after news of the discovery broke.

On October 22, 1989, Jacob was riding his bicycle with his brother and a friend when a masked gunman abducted him, telling the two other boys to run. That was the last that anyone saw of the 11-year-old.

Though authorities pursued numerous leads trying to track down Jacob or his kidnapper, it wasn’t until last year that a suspect was named: 53-year-old Danny Heinrich, who was tied to another case of a Stearns County boy’s kidnapping and sexual assault.

Heinrich’s brother, David Heinrich, told KARE-TV Saturday that he was sending his sympathies to the Wetterling family. "I want the Wetterlings to know I had no idea," David told KARE. "I am happy for them that they know — not that he's passed, but at least they have closure."

The statement on the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center site assures the public that the organization will not rest just because Jacob’s remains have been found.

“Our hearts are heavy, but we are being held up by all of the people who have been a part of making Jacob's Hope a light that will never be extinguished,” the statement reads. “It shines on in a different way. We are, and we will continue to be, Jacob's Hope. Jacob, you are loved.”

His aunt was a teacher of mine. I'm so glad he was finally found. So upset it took so long since this guy was interviewed decades ago.

His mother wouldn't move from the house that they lived in when he was kidnapped and she wouldn't change her phone number just in case he ever tried to make his way home. I'm glad that they finally have him back, but now they have to go through a trial. The endless sadness must weigh so heavily on them.

Maybe there won't be a trial...assuming the suspect led them to the remains, maybe he'll be pleading guilty.

I can't believe they finally found him after all these years. I remember his story. It was huge news in the days before the internet. I've checked on his story over the years to see if he was ever found. I'm sorry that it ended this way, but I'm glad it's over for his family. Even though it' a horrible end, I image it gives them some sort of closure and peace to know that their son has been found.

I just can't imagine. Thinking of his family breaks my heart.

My heart breaks for this family as well. The brother and Jacob's BF must be also going through hell with all the emotions finding Jacob's remains would bring up. I've followed this story for years and like the family I also held out hope for him to be found alive, as unlikely as that was.

I honestly don't know how people survive this kind of loss. I know they do, but god, what a nightmare. It's good that they have closure after all this time, but what an awful thing to have to relive.

(CNN)Danny James Heinrich, the child pornography suspect who led police to the remains of Jacob Wetterling, admitted in court Tuesday that he killed the 11-year-old Minnesota boy who disappeared 27 years ago, CNN affiliate WCCO reported.

Heinrich, who is pleading to a charge of being in receipt of child porn, will apparently escape state charges in the boy's death and faces between five and 20 years in prison, WCCO said. The judge said there would be no state prosecutions for crimes committed in 1989, the television station reported.

Heinrich confirmed he acted alone in the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of the boy.

I just heard on the news that Jacob asked his killer "What did I do wrong" after he was taken and handcuffed.

As the mother of a young son, I am so distraught after hearing that. I can only imagine the pain his parents feel. His last moments must have been unimaginably terrifying and painful.

Heinrich is the ultimate evil. He doesn't deserve to live.

Yeah...I have to wonder what's worse, knowing, or not knowing. Would like to assume knowing, but I think "closure" would be just as painful, but a different kind of painful because it also means loss of hope. I really can't even imagine. Glad that it seems they won't be enduring a trial. Small mercies.

So incredibly sad. I hope the family can have closure now but damn knowing he was terrified and crying makes it all the harder. You assume he was of course but you'd like to believe he didn't know to be afraid.

This is just horrible - like other have said, i don't know if it is worse to know or not to know. Heartbreaking either way, i just hope his family find a way to move on.
