Default John Hinckley Jr - President Reagan's Shooter Released

    JOHN HINCKLEY JR.
    PRESIDENT REAGAN'S SHOOTER RELEASED

President Reagan's attempted assassin will be a free man again after a federal judge signed off on John Hinckley Jr.'s release from a psychiatric hospital.

Hinckley was found not guilty by insanity for the the 1981 shooting that left Reagan with a chest injury. His press secretary, James Brady, was paralyzed ... a Secret Service agent, and a cop were also hit.

Hinckley has been in a psychiatric hospital since his trial. Wednesday morning Judge Paul Friedman said it was a difficult decision, but "The court finds by a preponderance of the evidence that Mr. Hinckley presents no danger to himself or to others in the reasonable future if released."

He must continue treatment and have no contact with the Reagan family or Jodie Foster ... with whom he was infatuated when he pulled the trigger.

Hmmmmm. The fact that he was so obsessed with Jodie Foster...enough to try to assassinate a President to get her attention, makes me think they need to keep him locked up and throw away the key.

He's been semi-free since 2005. He's been allowed home with his parents, etc for long visits up to 18 days at a time. He was even granted a driver's license.

    But that was all supervised.

The thought of him left to his own devices is concerning.

He won't be. The Secret Service will be allowed to tail him, he is restricted on where he can go and how long he can be places. He's requird to attend group and individual therapy and meet with his doctors in DC monthly. That's a lot of oversight.

    From a news report:

    • He must carry a GPS enabled phone whenever he is away from his mother's home, but no tracking devices need to be installed in his cars. He must notify his treatment team before going to any private residences.
    • He must travel to D.C. once a month for mental health treatment. His must provide detailed information about his travel to D.C. including his specific route and time of departure, but he can travel by himself. If he is delayed by more than 30 minutes, he needs to notify his treatment team.
    • He must have weekly phone calls with his health care professionals as well as individual and group therapy in Williamsburg. He also does monthly music therapy sessions. He has expressed an interest in recording an album.
    • He is expected to find a volunteer position or a job which must be approved by his mental health team.
    • He cannot speak with media. Any media contact by him or his family will constitute a violation of his release.
    • No drugs, no weapons.
    • No contact with the family members of his victims, which include the Reagan family, Brady family, Thomas Delahanty or Timothy McCarthy.
    • He cannot travel to areas where current or former presidents, Congress or senior executives or "United States Secret Service protectees" are found.
    • He can use the internet but cannot Google himself, research weapons, porn, or his victims.
    • He may not set-up any social media accounts without unanimous permission from his treatment team.
    • He must live with his mother in Williamsburg for the first-year of his full-time release and after that, following an assessment by his team, he may reside alone or with roommates within a 30 mile radius of Williamsburg.

He actually shot people and paralyzed a man and only served a year long than Squeaky Fromme did for pulling a gun on Ford and not shooting anyone. Our justice system might be a tad fucked up.

They're saying he's mentally stable and has been for years. (They being his medical team and the presiding judge)

The reason he is free at all was because there was a window of time in our legal system where someone who was found insane at the time they committed a heinous crime could later be freed once they were found to no longer be insane. The attempted assassination of Reagan revealed that glaring loophole, and I believe it was largely closed soon after.

If the treating mental health professionals have deemed that he's no longer "a threat to himself or others" I think they might have no choice but to release him. But I have to wonder what has changed re his mental status--he's been institutionalized for 35 years now. That's a long time to receive treatment in hopes of recovery.

He is 61 years old now, so his mother has to be quite elderly. Quite a lot for her to take on at this point. It seems like the authorities will be monitoring him closely. At least I hope so.

I was wondering the same because Jodie isn't mentioned in the CBS news report Charmed posted. But from the TMZ report:

"He must continue treatment and have no contact with the Reagan family or Jodie Foster ... with whom he was infatuated when he pulled the trigger."

I can't imagine that Foster would be left unprotected in the release terms.

agree. it seems so obvious so i'm assuming that her name just wasn't included in the list reported by CBS.
