A 12-year-old Northern California boy – who called police to report that a stranger had fatally stabbed his 8-year-old sister, Leila Fowler – has been arrested on suspicion of murder, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department.

The slaying shocked and frightened many of the 7,500 residents of Valley Springs, Calif., who locked their doors for the first time in years, kept their kids home from school and loaded their guns after Fowler died of multiple stab wounds.

Police searched through the rugged terrain, looked in and around homes and checked in on local registered sex offenders and parolees, looking for the tall, muscular man with long, scraggly hair described by the victim's brother.

But in the days after the fatal stabbing, a neighbor, who was the only witness to claim to have seen the fleeing man described by the brother, recanted her story. The police deemed the witness not credible. Police assured residents that there was no deadly predator in their midst targeting random victims and that the person who stabbed the bubbly third-grader 21 times knew her.

"Citizens of Calaveras County can sleep a little better tonight," Sheriff Gary Kuntz told reporters. He added that there were fingerprints and DNA evidence but declined to say where the suspect was being held or when he will appear in court.

The brother's arrest on Saturday comes two weeks after the April 27 attack.

At a vigil for Leila three days after the murder, several family members spoke, including her brother.

"I'm not saying goodbye to Leila," he said. "I'm saying 'See you later.' There are no goodbyes."

Murder of Leila Fowler, 8, Stuns Small Town in California

The stabbing of an 8-year-old girl in her home in Valley Springs, Calif., has residents of the small town loading their guns and keeping their kids home from school as police – who have few clues – search for the killer in hilly, remote terrain.

Police say Leila Fowler's 12-year-old brother, who was home with his sister on Saturday, spotted an intruder, who ran out of the house. The boy then discovered his sister severely injured and phoned his parents, who were at a Little League game. The girl was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The county coroner says she died from multiple stab wounds.

Friends say the third-grader had a heart-warming smile, loved the color purple and was a daddy's girl. Fowler's slaying has devastated the 10-square mile community of about 3,500 in Calaveras County, where residents typically keep their doors and windows open and the biggest newsmaker most years is the jumping frog contest written about by Mark Twain in 1865.

Now, residents say, their guns are loaded.

"This is way too close to home," Julia Poland, who has a 13-year-old daughter, told the Modesto Bee. "This kind of thing does not happen here."

So far, police seem to have few leads.

The brother described a muscular white or Hispanic man in a black shirt and blue pants, about 6 feet tall, with long, gray hair. Another witness who saw a man running from the home offered a similar description.

Police, with help from dogs and volunteers, have searched houses, attics, crawl spaces, sheds, outbuildings and tall grass. Investigators also lifted fingerprints and DNA from the house (lab results should take about a week), and checked with local registered sex offenders and parolees.

A candlelight vigil was planned for Tuesday evening at Leila's school, Jenny Lind Elementary.

Sheriff's Capt. Jim Macedo says Leila's parents, Barney Fowler and Krystal Walters (who stood behind him at a press conference but were too distraught to speak) ask that anyone with a tip call (209) 754-6030.

Sigh. How the fuck do you do that to your own sister?

Laurent, thanks for posting this. I had been thinking about posting it, too. I have to admit, I was suspicious of the brother from the start. Mainly, because the description of the crime didn't sound typical. What was strange to me was that it took so long for the arrest to happen. I'm wondering if he has confessed or there is such overwhelming physical and DNA evidence, that they just moved ahead and arrested him.

As late as two days ago, the poor mom was saying that she was tortured by the fact that they didn't have a suspect yet -- and then, this latest revelation.

If it really is him, I bet he was abusing her and that she threatened to tell.

Not necessarily. All it takes is a temper.

Yeah, why does there have to be the added abuse? Kids can be explosive.

True. I guess I'm thinking that because he is 12 and she was 8 that if he had a bad temper he would just pound her, not stab her.

I agree, poor parents. They've basically lost both their kids.

I'm with you guys, my first thought was the parents. Sending good vibes to that poor family, I hope they can find some peace.

Very sad. I wonder if the brother had issues that the parents were aware of. Stabbing is pretty frickin' brutal.

I heard that there was supposed to be a spaghetti dinner to raise money for the family, but it was cancelled because people were saying they didn't want the money to pay for the brothers defense.

I'm thinking the cops must have known all along.

The cops probably DID suspect the brother all along... BUT a neighbor had claimed to have seen the "bushy haired stranger" fleeing the area. When you have morons with some insane need to be part of shit like this and to be interviewed by the media or cops, it makes things much harder. The cops had an "eyewitness" claiming to have seen the murderer fleeing the scene... they had to wait for their credible witness to recant. I will never understand people like that.
