Default Jodi Arias on Trial for Murdering Travis Alexander

I'm wondering if anyone is following this case. I've been following it for a few years and the trial finally started - and it's pretty juicy.

She's changed her story multiple times and her defense if now painting him as a controlling pervert who forced her to kill him in self-defense.

    Here is an article:

Jodi Arias Trial Introduces Emails Calling Her Slut and Whore - ABC News

"Defense attorneys for Jodi Arias, the 32-year-old Arizona woman who has admitted to brutally murdering her former boyfriend Travis Alexander in 2008, claim that she was abused and controlled by Alexander, who she says was a sexual deviant.

In a case that is already being compared to the dramatic 2010 murder trial of Casey Anthony, Arias is facing the death penalty if convicted in the capital murder case. She is accused of stabbing Alexander 27 times, slitting his throat and shooting him in the head as he showered in his Mesa, Ariz., home in 2008. A jury will have to decide if she is a cold-blooded murderer or was a victim of domestic violence, as she claims, who was forced to kill.

WATCH LIVE: Jodi Arias Murder Trial

Appearing in court Wednesday as the trial opened, Arias cried through much of the opening arguments. Prosecutor Juan Martinez told the court that it's clear that Arias murdered Alexander.

"This is not a case of whodunit," he said. "The whodunit sits in court today."

Prosecutors told the jury Wednesday that Alexander was a devout Mormon who was seduced and then stalked by Arias, and killed by her in a jealous rage when she learned he was dating other women.

Arias' attorney Jennifer Willmott told the jury her client was forced to kill in self defense, saying that her client -- who recently won a Christmas caroling contest behind bars -- was abused and controlled by Alexander, who she claims was a sexual deviant. Willmott showed the jury a t-shirt she says he made Arias wear, with lettering that says 'Travis Alexander's.

"That t-shirt is the perfect example of how Travis treated her," she said.

The couple only dated a few months after meeting in 2006 at a work convention in Las Vegas. But the two continued a sexual relationship -- including on the day of the crime.

Police found a camera in Alexander's washing machine. They say Arias was literally trying to wash away the evidence.

Found on the camera's memory card were pictures of their final sexual encounter, shots of Alexander in the shower -- seconds before he was killed -- and pictures that appeared to be taken accidently when the camera was dropped. One of the images shows Alexander's bloody body, and another shows Arias actually dragging his body across the ground.

In a series of jailhouse interviews since her 2008 arrest, Arias repeatedly changed her story. First she denied being at Alexander's house the night of the murder, but two weeks later, she told the TV show "Inside Edition" she was there.

"I witnessed Travis being attacked by two other individuals," she said, "Who were they? I don't know."

Now she admits to killing Alexander, but says she had to after he attacked her when she dropped his new camera.

"Jodi Arias killed Travis Alexander," Willmott said in court Wednesday. "The million-dollar question is what would have forced her to do it, and throughout this trial you will hear that Jodi was indeed forced."

Willmott told the court that Arias, who has remained in jail since her arrest, repeatedly lied about the killing because she was scared."

She should have gone for insanity. If ever I saw a case of "the lights are on but no one's home", it's her.

Totally agreed. She seems to think she can bat her eyelashes and make people believe her outrageous lies. This trial is very interesting.

I had read about this yesterday, but just watched a few of the videos from the link. I have to agree about the lights on but no one is home thing. In one of the videos she outright says, "No jury is going to convict me. Because I am innocent and you can mark my words on that one. No jury is going to convict me." She seemed really convinced too.

It's hard for me to understand how the defense can use that t-shirt as some kind of proof that the victim was a "sexual deviant" or abusive. Maybe he was, but if I were on a jury, it would take a lot more than that to convince me.

The problem, though, is that the prosecutor was claiming she was stalking him, slashing his tires and burglarizing his place - or something like that. That type of claim isn't going to help convict her because it's clear from the camera images that they had consensual sex that day. I've been really hard up when I was younger, but not to the point where I would canoodle with someone who just made me pay $800 for new car tires.

The defense attorney's claim that the t-shirt shows Travis was possessive/abusive is just idiocy. But there are a lot of dopey juries out there. If I were the defense attorney, I would have asked for a change of venue to Orlando Florida.....

Sprynkles, I'm totally hooked as well. I'm on vacation this week and am so jazzed - the trial is playing in the background while I clean and cook, lol.

Waterslide, it's so interesting especially with the Mormon aspect. Travis told his friends and family that Jodi was stalking him, sneaking through the dog door in his home to sleep in his house without permission, etc -- however he was continuing to sleep with her with no one knowing. I can believe that he may have been a prick and a hypocrite, but there has been no evidence that he was abusive or a sexual deviant.

I find it funny that the defense is claiming that his tying her up with tassels makes him a sexual predator. Here's hoping the jury isn't that vanilla.

Didn't it work for that woman who stabbed her husband to death in his sleep and her defense was that he made her wear garters and high heels or something? I forgot the exact details of the case, though....

I'm not able to watch the trial because of my stupid job, lol. But I get the jist of it watching Jane Velez Mitchell and Nancy Grace.

I had a Mormon male room mate in my early twenties. He had been home from his mission for like 2 or 3 years. He was a journalist where I worked. He was as pure as the driven snow. But the one day he wasn't home and the phone rang while I was upstairs I had to run into his room and dive onto his bed to answer the call. On the other side of his bed was the sickest weird porn I'd ever seen. Not Playboy or Penthouse, but stuff you get at porn stores or overseas. I can't judge, he was a sweetie. I never let him know I saw it. I was more disturbed by the amount of my dishes and glasses that were laying by his bed.

Anyway, I totally believe the victim was using Jodi for his sexual needs, while trying to portray himself as a good Mormon. I think she went postal that he wanted someone else to go away with instead of her. I think she was reading all his emails and knew about the other Mormon chick he asked to go to Cabo with. Jodi didn't understand why he wouldn't want to take her. After all, she had done all she could do to seduce him. Why wasn't she good enough?

Mary Winkler? She shot her pastor husband 7x while he slept then loaded the station wagon with the kids and took a trip to the beach. I believe, in her case, that the husband was an abusive pig. But the real precipitating event was that Mary had just lost a bundle in a Nigerian email scam and didn't want to tell her husband about it.

She served 67 days in jail.

I just re-read a summary of the Winkler case on Wikipedia, and while that is hardly an authoritative source, I didn't see much in the way of evidence that the husband was an abusive pig. It also seemed that she didn't mention that either until she got to trial and her defense team had formulated a defense for her. She had held up a wig and some high-heeled shoes and said he made her wear them.

The wiki entry ends with Mary Winkler herself saying she should have received more time.

Tying this back to the Arias case, I am concerned that Arias' team may be formulating a defense on similar grounds. That somehow, based on vague and unsubstantiated feelings you have about your life being in jeopardy, you can shoot someone in the back while they are sleeping, or shoot, stab, and cut their throat while they are showering. And because the victim isn't alive to offer up their version of events, the defendant gets to spin whatever story they want, regardless of what the forensics from the scene say.

Oh Mohandes, I agree with everything you wrote. My conclusions about Mary Winkler's husband are based on the reaction of their community, his parents, and his bio. When Mary was first arrested, she confessed freely and expected life or the DP. Whatever her lawyers unearthed after that (there was plenty of evidence Mary and his family didn't want made public) turned the case for the whole area. There was some suggestion that the husband had preyed on other women, allegedly. But no matter what, you are absolutely correct.

Interesting find Jazzy! Strange fellow. Looking over his site, a lot of contradictions there. Sounds like he had an abhorrent childhood.

Hi everyone I'm new and thank you for letting me join you. I will be trying to keep up. I think this case has more in common with the OJ Simpson case than Casey Anthony. I just started really learning/following this case a couple months ago. But I had heard of it and seen a little on TV about it. Truly sick and twisted she is.
