Default Four People Killed at Jewish School in France; Gunman Remains at Large

A gunman on a motorcycle shot and killed three students and a teacher at a Jewish school in the Toulouse region of France. The man is thought to be responsible for two previous attacks on minorities that have occurred within the past 10 days.
One of the guns used Monday was also used in killings of French soldiers of north African origin who were shot and killed on March 11 and March 15, said Elisabeth Allannic, a spokeswoman for judicial authorities in Paris. A court in Paris on Monday opened an investigation into all three killings, under anti-terrorism powers.
The shooter arrived at the Ozar Hatorah school before 8 a.m. and began firing on students. The victims were a father and his two children, and the daughter of the school director. A 17-year-old was also wounded in the shooting.

French President Nicolas Sarcozy spoke Monday night, saying that the region would be on the highest possible security alert, and that "everything must be done so the killer is arrested." The Interior Ministry has also reached out to Jewish organizations "to arrange increased vigilance," in light of an attack that was almost certainly motivated by anti-Semitism.
Abraham Foxman, national director of the New York-based Anti-Defamation League, said that Jewish people had just as much reason to be vigilant before Monday's attack as after, given some people's anti-Semitism. He said he was "shocked, saddened but unfortunately not surprised" by the Toulouse shooting, which he felt was "targeted to express hatred against Jews."
According to BBC News, police are currently engaged in "one of the biggest manhunts in recent French history."

Default Gun in French School Shooting Linked to Prior Attacks

The French government has confirmed that the gun used to kill three French paratroopers last week is the same gun that a shooter used to fire on a Jewish school in Toulouse this morning, killing four, including a 30-year-old rabbi and his two children.

Investigators believe the shooting is linked to two attacks last week that killed three soldiers and wounded one. In all the attacks, the killer acted alone, arrived by motorcycle and used the same weapon.

The shooter, who arrived and fled from the Ozar Hatorah school on a scooter or a motorcycle, "shot at everything he could see," according to local prosecutor Michel Valet. The head of a French-Jewish association who saw closed-circuit television footage of the attack said the shooter could be seen "running after children," and then catching up with them and shooting one in the head.

The dead included Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, who taught at the school, his 3- and 6-year-old sons Gabriel and Arieh, and the school headmaster's 8-year-old daughter, according to the Israeli newspaper Ynet. Sandler, a French-Israeli national, had left Israel last September to begin a two-year teaching stint at the school, according to the Le Parisien newspaper.

A 17-year-old and two other students were seriously wounded.

French interior ministry spokesman French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet confirmed to ABC News that the same gun was used in two other incidents where a shooter targeted his victims while driving a motorcycle in the same area. Last Sunday, a paratrooper out of uniform was killed by a gunman on a motorbike outside of a gym in a suburb of Toulouse.

On Thursday, two soldiers were killed and a third wounded by a shooter on a scooter as they used an ATM in Montauban, about 30 miles away.

All three soldiers who died were of North African origin, while the wounded soldier was of Caribbean descent. According to French media, police are looking into far right and Islamist motives for the shootings, though they have not discounted any motive. Investigators are reportedly interested in talking to three paratroopers discharged from the same regiment as the dead soldiers four years ago because of neo-Nazi ties.

The same .45 caliber handgun was used in the shootings last week and this morning. French media have also reported that the same stolen Yamaha scooter was used in the school shooting and in last week's attack.

However, there have been slightly differing descriptions of the motorcyle that suggest the same scooter might not have been used in all three attacks, or that it might have been painted.

Witnesses of today's shooting described a horrific scene at the drop-off point for nursery- and primary-age students. The killer arrived with two weapons, and one jammed, according to AFP.

"I saw two people dead in front of the school, an adult and a child ... It was a vision of horror, the bodies of two small children," a father whose child attends the school told RTL radio. "I did not find my son. Apparently he fled when he saw what happened. How can they attack something as sacred as a school?"

"Just because we are different doesn't mean we should be killed," one student's father, in tears, told the local newspaper Sud Quest from outside the school.

One student described how the shooting began just as she arrived for her morning prayers. "We were really afraid," she told Sud Quest. She said after police arrived, the children sat down, were given water, and prayed together.

Police say they have locked Toulouse down as they hunt for the killer, and the government tightened security at all religious sites in France, particularly Jewish schools. Sixty police officers, including anti-terrorist police, are helping with this investigation after they had already begun examining the attacks on the troops.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is running for re-election, immediately flew to Toulouse, which is about 425 miles south of Paris.
"Whatever happens," he said, "faced with this kind of toll, we can say that the French Republic as a whole has been hit by this appalling tragedy."

It is hard to believe this heartless psycho is still loose. It would seem no one, not even the smallest child is safe until he is caught. This is so heartbreaking!

They have the killer's home surrounded described as a French citizen, 24, who has spent time with Islamic groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan. News reports said he was of Algerian origin and had invoked the al-Qaeda terrorist network in his contacts with police in shouted conversations through the locked door of an apartment.

Meanwhile thousands attended the funeral at the Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem on Wednesday morning.. my prayers go out to the families of all the victims.

Thank goodness they found him. So he's Muslim then? Then he killed his own since two of the soldiers killed were said to be Muslim.

What a douche - I will never understand the urge to just go and kill random people.

Did he surrender yet?? Last I heard he was holed up, heavily armed. I hope it ends peacefully and no law enforcement are injured/killed in all this. Been enough bloodshed.

I don't get why he's targeting minorities if he is one himself. Just crazy maybe. Sick son of a bitch, who the hell can shoot a 3yo in the head?

As muslims who worked with the allies (aka "infidels"), their deaths pleased god, or some such religious shit. I can't stand religion in principal; 300 years from now people will still be killing each other based on some story told by people who thought the earth was flat.

    French police corner shootings suspect

    From correspondents in Toulouse
    From: AFP
    March 22, 2012 5:23AM

FRENCH police have laid siege to an apartment block where a self-declared al-Qaeda militant who claimed a series of deadly attacks on troops and Jewish children was holed up.
Officials said suspect Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent who has visited Afghanistan and Pakistan, bragged of being an al-Qaeda member and said he had killed to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children.
Gunfire erupted as members of the RAID police special forces team tried to storm an apartment in a residential district of Toulouse in a pre-dawn raid, and two officers were wounded, Interior Minister Claude Gueant said.
After the clash the two sides settled down into an armed siege, with police initially talking to the suspect through the door. Nine hours after the standoff began, officials evacuated neighbours from the five-storey block.
President Nicolas Sarkozy told religious community representatives that the gunman had planned to carry out another attack today, a Jewish leader said. A police source said the suspect also planned to kill another soldier.
Mr Sarkozy met with the representatives in a police station near the building where the suspect was negotiating with police. He left the station without making any comments to the media.
Mr Gueant said the suspect was thought to be armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Mini-Uzi 9mm machine pistol and other handguns, but had thrown a .45 pistol used in the seven murders in the previous nine days from a window.
Mr Sarkozy said earlier in a televised address after a meeting with Muslim and Jewish community leaders that "terrorism will not succeed in fracturing our national community".
"I say to the entire nation that we must be united," said the president, who has suspended his re-election campaign to deal with the crisis and to pay his respects to the dead from the recent killings.
Paris Grand Mosque Rector Dalil Boubakeur urged France not to stigmatise his community, saying "99.9 per cent" of French Muslims were law-abiding citizens and the killings were the work of a tiny "fringe".
Mr Gueant said the suspect had for several years been tracked by France's DCRI intelligence agency and its agents in Toulouse, but that there was never anything to suggest that he was preparing a criminal act.
Merah spoke to officers through the door of his apartment, and declared himself to be a "mujahideen" or Islamic warrior, fighting to avenge Palestinian children killed in the conflict with Israel, the minister said.
"This person has made trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the past... and says he belongs to al-Qaeda and says he wanted to avenge Palestinian children and to attack the French army," Mr Gueant said at the scene.
Merah, who twice tried and failed to join the French army, had previously been arrested on an unspecified charge in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, cradle of the Taliban, a police source said.
The siege came on the day that the Jewish victims of the attacks were being buried in Jerusalem and two of the soldiers were being laid to rest, one in France and one in Morocco.
If the suspect is proved responsible for the killings, it would bring to an end one of the most intense manhunts in French history and help calm tensions after the series of attacks disrupted the presidential election.
The shootings began on March 11, when a paratrooper of North African origin arranged to meet a man in Toulouse to sell him a scooter which he had advertised online.
A message sent from the suspect's brother's IP address was used to set up an appointment to inspect the bike, an appointment at which paratrooper Imad Ibn Ziaten was subsequently killed, a police source said.
Four days later three more paratroopers from another regiment were gunned down, two of them fatally, in the same fashion in a street in the nearby garrison town of Montauban.
The pair - Corporal Abel Chennouf, 25, and Private First Class Mohammed Legouade, 23, - were also French soldiers of North African Arab origin.
Arab soldiers are prized targets for groups like al-Qaeda, which regards Muslims who fight for Western armies as traitors.
Then on Tuesday the shooter, again wearing a motorcycle helmet and riding a scooter, attacked the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse, killing a religious studies teacher, his toddler sons and a seven-year-old girl.
Jonathan Sandler, his sons Arieh, five, and Gabriel, four, and seven-year-old Miriam Monsonego were buried on Wednesday in Givat Shaul cemetery on the western outskirts of Jerusalem.
Mr Sarkozy and several rival candidates for his presidency attended a memorial ceremony for the slain soldiers in Montauban, and were to visit the wounded police in Toulouse.
source: French police corner shootings suspect | - it's a Murdoch "news" site, so pinch of salt and all that.

Yep. Shooting a four year old in the head in the name of your god will really make people feel empathy for the Palestinians. Arsehole.

Still "under siege". How fortified and well armed can this guy be? After all, they usually want to die.
    What do we want?
    When do we want it?
