Default Aruba Part 2, the Robin Gardner edition

I didn't see this one posted before, but I think the story kind of just emerged last week and has gotten a lot of play on HLN and MSNBC. A woman in her thirties disappears while vacationing with an on-again-off-again male friend in Aruba. He claims they were snorkeling or something, and that she went to far out and got caught in a rip tide. Her friends all claim that she is not the type to go snorkeling in the first place.

But here is a new development:

Missing in Aruba: Suspect Took Out $1.5 Million Insurance Policy

Authorities in Aruba are investigating an insurance policy taken out by Gary Giordano before his trip to Aruba as a possible motive in the disappearance of missing Maryland woman Robyn Gardner.
The investigation into the $1.5 million accidental death policy on Gardner -- which names Giordano as a beneficiary -- has been confirmed exclusively with ABC News by a police source in Aruba, as has the fact that he purchased the pricier one-year policy over the cheaper, more commonly purchased five-year policy.
Gardner, 35, has been missing for two weeks, since reportedly snorkeling with Giordano off of an isolated beach on August 2. The two traveled together from Maryland to Aruba on July 31. She is now presumed to be dead by Aruba police.

The FBI is also investigating the American Express accidental death policy and has agents in Aruba to question Giordano -- a man whom court documents show is trailed by a history of domestic violence.
Giordano, 50, was ordered this week to remain in an Aruban jail for another 16 days while police investigate what they say are "serious inconsistencies" in his story. Investigators have found apparent gaps in time between when witnesses saw the pair on the beach and the timeline Giordano gave when he reported Gardner missing.

Though he has not been charged with a crime, Giordano remains the only suspect in the case.

    Erratic Behavior Surrounding Disappearance

Surveillance video from local businesses place Giordano and Gardner at the Rum Reef Bar & Grill in the Baby Beach area of the island before Gardner went missing, a police source in Aruba told ABC News. Restaurant staff said that Gardner seemed woozy while the two ate; Giordano later told police they'd been drinking vodka at the Marriott before dining, and that she'd taken sleeping pills earlier in the day, the police source said.
Video also shows Giordano in his rental car parked in the back of the bar and restaurant. The Toyota Rav-4 had tinted windows, so no one else in the vehicle can be identified. Giordano parked the car in the back parking lot twice; he told police that he wanted to park in the shade, the police source told ABC News.
The car was cleaned once Giordano returned the car to the Star rental at Aruba's airport, so police were unable to investigate the vehicle, according to police in Aruba. The rental agents said that they didn't notice anything unusual when it was cleaned.

Investigators have also said that they had trouble identifying Giordano in surveillance video because he frequently changed his toupees.
At approximately 6:02 p.m., after Gardner went missing, the police source said that Giordano is also seen in surveillance video, tapping on closed shutters of the bar -- seemingly making his presence known. At approximately 6:20 p.m. he headed to the back kitchen of the bar and told someone to call police.
Authorities said that that they found blood on a rock behind the dive shop at the Rum Reef Bar & Grill, which is the last place the two were seen together.
Investigators also told ABC News of Giordano's other erratic behavior at the time of the disappearance -- including that he left the search early to get some sleep at his hotel.

Yes. And it sounded like he wasn't really in the loop (didn't know she was down in Aruba). Over the past few days, I think that it has come out that they would periodically take a break from each other.

Gardner has a female roommate who said that Gardner had texted "this sucks" shortly before she disappeared.

    Hmmmmm...

The suspect in the disappearance of a Maryland woman during a vacation in Aruba had taken out a travel insurance policy on her, an island official said Wednesday.

It is too early to conclude whether the insurance policy was a possible motive for the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, Solicitor General Taco Stein told CNN. Stein declined to say whether the development was of any consequence, other than to say it is being investigated.

According to Aruban prosecutors, the missing woman and the suspect, Gary Giordano, arrived on the island July 31 from the United States. She was last seen August 2 near Baby Beach, on the west side of the island.

Giordano told authorities that he had been snorkeling with Gardner when he signaled to her to swim back, according to a statement from the prosecutor's office. He said Gardner was nowhere to be found when he reached the beach, according to prosecutors.

Giordano's lawyer, Michael Lopez, argued unsuccessfully Monday that there was not enough evidence to keep his client behind bars.

Travel insurance policies often include accidental death coverage, but usually that amount does not exceed $50,000, a CNN survey of popular policies showed. The more expensive policies include accidental death coverage as high as $100,000.

Meanwhile, an FBI official has arrived in Aruba to act as a liaison in the case.

In addition, investigators plan to mount another search for Gardner, 35, in the coming days, Stein said. The efforts will be focused on the southern tip of the Dutch Caribbean island, with police, firefighters and Dutch troops taking part, he said.

FBI agents have already been involved in the case, searching Giordano's Gaithersburg, Maryland, home.

A judge in Aruba ordered Monday that Giordano be held for another 16 days while police continue their investigation.

Can you just take out a $1.5 million insurance policy on someone without her consent?

Robyn Gardner, the woman who went missing in Aruba this week, apparently sent disappointed Facebook messages about her trip there to several friends. And now her boyfriend suspects her traveling companion of hacking her email account.

Gardner, 35, disappeared Aug. 2 while traveling with fifty-year-old Gary Giordano, apparently her friend. Giordano said she disappeared while snorkeling, but not everyone buys this. Her roommate, Christina Jones, was suspicious of Giordano before the trip — she tells CBS, "I was not excited about her going away with Gary." She adds that Giordano had reacted oddly to a previous change of plans: "When she changed her mind, the way he responded set off a firework within my own self, so I got worried when she said she was going to leave to go to Aruba with Gary."

Meanwhile, Gardner's boyfriend Richard Forester doesn't believe the snorkeling story. He tells People, "She wouldn't have gone snorkeling and gotten her hair and makeup messed up. She would have been drinking by then. She would have been laying out by the beach." Both say Gardner seemed to be having a bad time on the trip — she apparently messaged both of them on Facebook to say, "This sucks." And Forester thinks Giordano may have been using Gardner's Gmail account. He explains, "Throughout Wednesday and Thursday her indicator lights were green, orange and gray. This was after she was reported missing. So someone was on her Gmail account." Forester adds,

A woman who used to date him contacted me and told me Giordano is very technologically savvy. This woman said he'd get into a person's email account, pick up their personality and would then take on that persona.
Giordano is currently being detained for questioning in Aruba, and as it turns out, he has a history of abuse accusations. According to the Washington Post, one ex-girlfriend says he "stalked her, secretly videotaped them having sex and then posted pornographic images of her on the Internet." His ex-wife accused him of attacking their son. And then there's this story, eerily reminiscent of Jones's early misgivings about Giordano:

Another woman who dated Giordano, Jeanette Farago, said in an interview with The Washington Post that Giordano stalked and harassed her while they both lived in Montgomery County. At one point, Farago said, Giordano offered to take her on a two-week cruise and bought her a ticket, but she refused to go. Giordano also showed up outside her window wearing a deer mask and illuminated his face with a cigarette lighter, she said. "He was just really creepy and scary," Farago said. "He scared the bejesus out of me."
It's not clear what Gardner's relationship was with Giordano. Jones says the two had "a roller coaster friendship, you know, good one day, not so great the next." Meanwhile, Forester says Gardner told him Giordano was her "gay friend." It's also not clear what his questioning will reveal — his lawyer says "there's no proof and there's no motive" for him to kill Gardner. Meanwhile, her parents are still hopeful she will be found alive. They've released a statement saying, in part,

We can only pray that she will soon be with us and bring back the joy into our lives. She means the world to us.

The insurance company should at least have to inform the person that a someone is hoping to cash out big time on their 'accidental' death so they can avoid taking a vacation with that person to a place where bodies disappear forever.

Not sure about all states but here in PA you can't buy life insurance on someone unless you are related, married, have a business interest, etc. I had a policy on my husband and was only allowed to keep it in force because we had a minor child. The insurance company informed me it would not be renewed once she was 18. I could only have it to provide income in case he died and was unable to continue to pay child support. The policy that we had on me had to be changed so that my child is the beneficiary - not him - once we divorced.

    Seriously!

There's also the case of Amy Bradley who was on a cruise with her family. They had just visited Aruba. She went missing. Some people think she might have been sold into a white slavery sex ring. It's theorized that could have happened to Natalie Holloway as well.

    Maybe this guy sold her.

My friends went on their honeymoon to Aruba, luckily they came back... I don't think I will ever visit there.

I've been reading up on this story. It's very bizarre. I truly hope they find some real evidence to lock him up.

Aruba Mystery: What Happened to Missing Robyn Gardner?

Robyn Gardner was supposed to be in Orlando with her parents. At least that's what she told her boyfriend, Richard Forester.

Then she told Forester she actually had gone to Aruba on a surprise family trip.

In fact, the 35-year-old beautiful, blond Maryland woman with a radiant smile had traveled to the Caribbean with a man named Gary Giordano, a 50-year-old businessman also from Maryland with a disturbing past.

Now, Gardner is missing and presumed dead, Giordano is being detained, and questions are mounting about what happened during their island stay.

    Graphic Photos

The mystery has only deepened as authorities in Aruba begin releasing details from the investigation.

The most recent shocker was the discovery of graphic photographs on Giordano's digital camera. The images, a source tells PEOPLE are "beyond pornographic."

No other information about the photos has been revealed, and it's still not known exactly when the pictures were taken and whether Gardner had engaged in the acts willingly.

It's the latest surprise in a case that had already gained notoriety because of its parallels to the unsolved disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 18, from Aruba in 2005. The suspect in that case, Joran van der Sloot, is being tried this fall in Peru for the murder of another woman. The Natalee Holloway Resource Center has opened a tip line for the Gardner case.

The leads have been provocative. Along with the photos, authorities revealed they're looking into a $1.5 million accidental death insurance policy that Giordano reportedly took out on Gardner before their trip.

"He's a mean bastard," says Taco Stein, solicitor general in Aruba. "The way he treats women it's all geared toward himself."

    Arrived Together

So how did Gardner end up with him?

Gardner's roommate and friend Christina Jones says the two met online about a year ago and had been platonic friends, speaking occasionally. He had asked to travel with her before, but she turned him down.

Then, in late June, when Gardener lost her job as a patient coordinator in a dental office, she accepted his offer for a free trip to Aruba, then told her boyfriend she was off with her family.

"She went on the trip because she trusted him," Jones says, "to clear her head after losing her job."

Jones and Gardner's boyfriend both refuse to believe Gardner would have sex with Giordano or pose for the photos.

"This wasn't a part of our life. Ever," says Forester. "We already know he has a long history of this sort of behavior with women. Robyn would never consent to this."

Witnesses say Gardner and Giordano arrived together on July 31. Two days later, Giordano called 911 to report that Gardner had disappeared. He told police that she had never returned from an evening snorkeling trip they took on Aug. 2.

On the day of her disappearance, Gardner reportedly sent Forester, 40, a message on Facebook that read: "Don't worry. I care about you, I love you, we'll talk and sort things out when I [get] back. "

For now, as investigators continue to sort out how and why Gardner and Giordano were together, Forester is expressing doubts about Giordano's story, including the account of snorkeling. "She wouldn't go in the water above the waist because she wouldn't want to mess up her hair," he says.

Giordano was arrested on Aug. 5 at the airport where he allegedly changed his original flight to an earlier one. He had agreed to stay to help the authorities but decided to leave the day after Gardner's mother arrived.
