SANTA ANA (KTLA) -- A man who was convicted last year of attempted murder for beating his 74-year-old mother with a shovel has now been charged with murder.

49-year-old Robert Lawrence Char faces one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for use of a deadly weapon.

In June 2009, Char was living with his mom, Joyce, at her Fountain Valley home when he got into an argument with her because she asked him to do some house work.

The fight prompted Char to grab a shovel and hit his mother in the head repeatedly, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The woman was hospitalized with blunt force trauma to the head and she remained unresponsive -- in a coma -- for a year and a half until she died in December 2010.

According to prosecutors, doctors say she died as a direct result of the injuries sustained during the attack.

Char will be arraigned Wednesday.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.
