that's what i wondered, too. it seems like there's more to the story than we're told.

how does a 13-year-old have access to a hunting rifle, anyway?

it is weird how people think we are just some blobs that situations make us and do not have our potential in us and without havin a bad childhood or having a great one does not always matter, ive seen people come off incredibly ok with extreme situations and then havin a great parents and being completely off the hook. it is something that cannot completely be explained, thats why psychology only has theories not strict rules or scientific facts.

I don't think everyone who has done something bad has had a bad childhood. But a lot have. Of course, that doesn't mean every kid who is abused turns out to be a rapist/murderer, and thank god for that! But I think if you have the potential in you to commit crimes like that then being abused could set that off inside of you.
I agree it's something that can't fully be explained though. My best friend is from an awful family, every one of them are deeply troubled apart from her. Why is she different? So yes, it's complicated.

Yeah, I could not believe that he was sentenced in a way that would allow him to be up for parole. However, after he murdered his grandparents, and admitted to it, he not only spent less than 5 years in jail, he was also able to have his juvenile record expunged. WTF???

And he has a 136 IQ. He could have been a real-life Hannibal Lechter but his impulse control appears to be virtually non-existent.

Exactly. And he REQUESTED the death penalty... after being found guilty of 8 counts of murder, but somehow he's eligible for parole?!?

Regarding California and murderers there, check out this Wiki link on San Quentin (San Quentin State Prison - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), and then scroll down to "Notable Inmates/Current". It truly chilling how many Kemper types are in that facility. Ironically, Kemper himself is at a different prison.
