Default Mother charged with murder of four-year-old girl

This is the mother accused of murdering her little girl in a bath.
Her dark brown hair tied back, Laura Fletcher seems to clutch her hands behind her head as she is driven away from court in a prison van yesterday.
The 22-year-old appeared before magistrates as police released photographs of the four-year-old daughter she is said to have drowned.

Murder charge: 22-year-old Laura Fletcher is led away yesterday from court in Birkenhead

The images match with neighbours' accounts that nursery school pupil Chloe was always well turned-out and seemed happy.
She appears not to have a care in the world here as, dressed in a pretty white and pink frock, she clutches a biscuit on a warm sunny day.
Her mother is accused of killing the youngster in the bath at their home, before drying her body, dressing her, laying her on a bed and calling police.

Tributes: Chloe Fletcher was described as a 'happy girl' as police released this picture

Chloe's body was found at her home in Wallasey, Merseyside, in the early hours of Wednesday after her mother dialled 999 at a phone box.
After being questioned, Fletcher was charged with murdering her daughter at some point since last Sunday and appeared at Wirral Magistrates' Court in Birkenhead.
Jenny Williams, prosecuting, said Chloe had drowned in the bath.
'She had been removed from the bath and had been dried, dressed and laid on the defendant's bed,' she added.
Wearing a plain white T-shirt, Fletcher spoke only to confirm her name and address during the hearing.

She was remanded in custody to appear at crown court later this month.
Chloe attended Oakdale Nursery a few yards from her home, where staff and parents yesterday paid tribute to the little girl.

Police examine the house in Wallasey, Merseyside, where Chloe was found dead
Nursery owner Karen Lane said: 'In the short time that Chloe was with us, we knew her to be a happy, bright and cheerful member of our nursery.
'We are, all of us, deeply shocked at this terrible news and are still trying to come to terms with it.
'I as owner, and all my staff feel a deep sense of loss at this terrible event.
'Our thoughts and prayers are with Chloe and all the members of her family.'
Neighbours of the mother and daughter, who lived alone, said they had tried without success to befriend Fletcher since she moved in about a year ago, and most did not even know her name.

The mother looks like she's 15, not 22...Did she really think she'd get away? Water in the lungs doesn't occur while sleeping in bed...

^^ That thing on her lip is pretty nasty!

Poor little girl...I would love to have a little girl...these stories absolutely baffle me.
I'm not quite drunk enough to really care, but is this her violation of her violation of her violation of her violation of probation or her violation of her violation of her violation of her probation????? ~MontanaMama on LL's latest arrest.

I thought it was a shadow from the raindrops. There really are a lot of people offing their kids lately but, after looking up a few things, it appears it's no more than usual, it's just that every single bloody thing that happens in the world travels to the other side of the world in miliseconds. I'm trying to remember that.

If it was a shadow from the raindrops, wouldn't there be more than one? There's several on the window.

The fact that she dried and dressed the child before laying her out on the bed suggests she did in fact love her but suffered some kind of intense mental breakdown. There is nothing in the article to say that the mother tried to pass the death off as being accidental or natural causes, nor did she try and hide the body and pass things off as an abduction or similar - she went straight to the police and confessed. While it is devastating that this little girl died at the hands of her mother, the actions following the murder make me think that this is someone who has lost the plot in a big way rather than being plain old evil and selfish like, say, Casey Anthony.

If this is a mental health issue then the last place she needs to be sent is prison, she needs specialist treatment in a secure facility for a long, long time. Sadly, in the UK you are more likely to be sent to prison than a secure mental unit should undiagnosed or untreated conditions get out of control, which doesn't actually solve anything in the long run, and often makes things worse. at least two thirds of women in UK prisons are said to have mental health problems and over half have been given a diagnosis of personality disorders. The suicide rate amongst women prisoners in the UK is thought to be as much as 20% higher than amongst women in the general population.

I was kind of thinking the same thing but was slightly leary of expressing those sentiments. And that feels odd.

I just always try and not automatically view mentally ill as equalling evil. To me evil is someone like (as I mentioned) Casey Anthony or Baby P's stepfather. They have all their marbles and they STILL commit stomach churning crimes. To know rationally that what you are doing is wrong and still do it to further your own needs and desires is evil.

For all we know right now, this mother may be suffering from some form of personality disorder and in her unbalanced state thought that she was saving her daughter from even greater harm should she continue to grow up in the world. In her own, unbalanced world she may have thought that she was acting out of love. That doesn't negate what she did in any way, shape or form and she should be taken out of society and treated appropriately, but its definately a hell of a way from killing your kid because you wanted to party or just because you got off on it.

Mentally ill or not, she knew what she was doing. She had the foresight to call the police and then admit it when they interrogated her. She was obviously trying to hide it, and that tells me she is more sane than I am comfortable with. Fry her ass!

This girl was known to social services, as mentioned in link below. I wonder what had previously gone on there?
