Oh, wow, I missed that they'd positively identified her. I can't even think about what she must've endured.

I guess my question now is whether this was someone who knew her and was stalking her, or whether the person was just being opportunistic.

In my opinion, it's someone who lives in the area, who knew that she walks this route regularly. I'm basing that mainly on the fact that she walks three blocks or so before she would meet up with her friends. Also, I guess there is the possibility that it was someone she knew casually who she might trust to get in the car of, without a struggle. I haven't heard yet on whether her parents had given her the basic warnings about keeping her distance from strangers or the tactics they might use to lure her in.

If they hadn't she'd be the only kid in the world who didn't get the warnings.

I saw a tv program a few years back, the hosts collaborated with the parents, and laid out well thought out plans to get teens to fall for being lured into danger at a mall and exposing themselves to abduction. Almost all of the kids fell for the various scenarios. What I remember most was all the parents freaking out over how they had always taught their kids to be wary of strangers, and how could they fall for these scenes.

And the people capable of kidnapping and murder are designed to be manipulative. They're cold readers. They keep talking til they find the weakness. And as for the kids, I think sometimes they think it can't be happening to them, that this person in front of them is really not going to harm them, that they're overreacting.

    It happens to adults too.

We do what we can to try to be safe and smart, but things can happen anyway.

they did this to some kids on the today show and i think natalie morales' son was included in the group and she was freaking out because he actually fell for it after all she'd talked to him about.

i don't have kids but i'd hammer this into their heads and maybe tattoo it on the inside of their eyelids.

A million years ago, Oprah recommended a book called The Gift of Fear written by some FBI guy. Its an excellent read, mostly about when that little voice inside says somethings wrong to go with it.

I remember that book. It sounded like a pretty amazing book. One of the things I remembered was the guy saying was that if a guy has a gun and tries to get you to go somewhere, refuse. Even at the risk of being shot. He said something like, "The forest are littered with the bodies of people who went along because the guy had a gun."

Looking at the Wiki entry, it seems like a lot of the thrust of the book was to look for behaviors in other people that could be precursors to violence or similar behavior. Below were some other tips:

    PINS (Pre-Incident Indicators)

    1. Forced Teaming. This is when a person tries to pretend that he has something in common with a person and that they are in the same predicament when that isn't really true.
    2. Charm and Niceness. This is being polite and friendly to a person in order to manipulate him or her.
    3. Too many details. If a person is lying they will add excessive details to make themselves sound more credible.
    4. Typecasting. An insult to get a person who would otherwise ignore one to talk to one. For example: "Oh, I bet you're too stuck-up to talk to a guy like me."
    5. Loan Sharking. Giving unsolicited help and expecting favors in return.
    6. The Unsolicited Promise. A promise to do (or not do) something when no such promise is asked for; this usually means that such a promise will be broken. For example: an unsolicited, "I promise I'll leave you alone after this," usually means you will not be left alone. Similarly, an unsolicited "I promise I won't hurt you" usually means the person intends to hurt you.
    7. Discounting the Word "No". Refusing to accept rejection.

My father's business partner's parents were both spies (actual former CIA and SOE spies) and the dad would lecture us on 'stay safe' tips when we were younger. Not going with someone holding you at gunpoint was one he mentioned numerous times.

Some of his tips were pretty far out (if you have to ever stab someone- stick them, don't slash them, and make sure to pull the knife out - it does more damage), but some were good. He was quite the character.

He had told me when I first learned to drive to keep a mans baseball cap in the car, so when I drove alone at night I could tuck my hair into it and appear to be a boy.

Another one that I've always remembered is that if your car breaks down on a quiet or wooded road, and you have to pull onto the shoulder don't stay with the car. After you call for help conceal yourself some distance away from the car in the brush. You can see your help when it arrives, but aren't visible to someone looking for helpless stranded prey.
