I have AVG, and I hardly have any pop-ups. I can't remember when the last one was.

Malwarebytes.org I just found this through majorgeeks.com. It removed the SpyAxe/SpyGuard malware crap.

I don't recommend hijackthis for people that aren't really knowledgeable about their registry and such. If you DO use it, just save the log and DON'T DELETE ANYTHING without talking to someone who has seen your log and understands it.
Don't worry about what other people think. They don't do it very often.

I love Spybot and have the latest version. (Still think this is the sweetest licensing agreement.) It hasn't slowed down my computer but some of the features - prompt for blocking banner ads are getting old.

Are you running two software packages for antivirus/spyware at the same time? That will slow down your computer.

Another option: HijackThis Logfileauswertung Download the programm mentioned. Do a scan, copy the report and paste it into this site. They check all of the programms and processes running and tell you exactly what is good or should be fixed. I will download it and post here for those 'in the know'

What kind of Firewall do you use? I have Windows XP and have it activated.

Do you remember, when the slowing down happened? It had been a gradual process until the past few months. I don't think it is my ISP since I check the speed with 2Wire when it happens and I'm right on target with DSL service in my area. It's mostly when opening software like spreadsheets or word docs...or when I'm switching from one URL address to another.

How do you "delete" software from your PC / Laptop? I always use the Add/Remove program

I also downloaded Windows Defender that I eventually disabled because it made my system slow down to a crawl for hours while it was running in the background. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'll see what happens and where I go from here~

I have Spybot, but it hasn't helped me. I currently have a re-direct virus, which changed my homepage and makes things run slow. Spybot and all the others I've tried can't get rid of it. It came from an online game. I'm afriad the only way to get rid of it is to completely clean it out and re-install everything.

I would love for my next purchase to be a MAC but I use my computer for work and 25-50% of what I work with are Excel spreadsheets from the office. I've been told the transition is not an easy one with MAC...nor for those I send it to if they don't use MAC as well.
