Thanks for the tips - looks like the shortlist is Dell, Sony or Toshiba. My daughter is a total geek and does not care about the aesthetics at all so it's not an issue and probably widens the choice. More important is good tech support if it goes wrong, generous memory/speed, not too heavy/bulky and able to withstand knocks. I will speak to the lovely Pete today (my tame tekky who should be an underwear model, sigh) and ask his opinion over a coffee, or dinner or something

Wait another month for the new dual portable CPUs to come out, they're really good.

I've still got time - her birthday isn't until early Sept and I don't think she'll mind waiting a bit longer if there's some cool stuff (I assume a dual portable CPU whatever that is, is cool?).

it means it can do two things at once (theoretically) without slowing down

Well I've just spoken to Pete The Geek and he likes Toshiba and their repair centre is only 20mins down the road. His sidekick Malcolm (seriously) who's a dead ringer for Comic Book Guy prefers Dell. I think it will boil down to which one does the best deal + software.

Mac is still the best. WAY more bang for your buck, especially with laptops. And they don't get viruses, either.

^^^ I know, but I have to be practical here. When she's old enough to buy her own 'puter she can do what she likes!

They're comparable in price these days, at least here in Canada.

Sorry AO, I have been away. However as I work in IT and have worked for two PC manufacturers here is my two cents.

    Since you are in Oz.

    Acer.

It is the number 1 for laptops here. It also has the best support available.

On the Acer site you can also buy ex-demo stock ( alot of current model stuff is here - large potential clients get to trial several models for a week before making a decision to standardise on one - the trial ones not picked then go into the ex demo online store )

Toshiba is rubbish. They pack their laptops full of proprietry software that is more of hinderance than help. Support is very average.

Dell. Number 1 overall in the world. However all their support it outsourced to india and you will go barmy trying to get cust supt.

Lenovo ( IBM ) make nice (although boxy ) machines ( still IBM specs ) but its transition from IBM is an unknown qauntity for supt. and quality.

Sony. Sony is for people with dollars not sense. no better than any other brand but you pay more.

HP. Look at them against Acer. Good out of the box solution.

Shortlist Acer v HP so you can compare something but I would go ( and have gone with Acer )

Do you work for Acer? My kids school had a brief and expensive flirtation with giving all students (well actually the parents had to buy them) laptops and the experiment collapsed after less than a year because of all the techno problems. And the brand was? ACER !!! My son's machine had no less than 3 cracked screens and a faulty power switch and my daughter's kept getting fried batteries and the mousepad thingy didn't work.

    No I dont.

But you get what you pay for. The PC's for govt/education are cheap.

I have an Acer Aspire 3000 series. Does the job well and was not that exxy.

I would say any laptop would have suffered with kids anyway. They have no concept of the cost so they treat them rough.

You could get a ruggedised one but they cost aboy $1k more than its non rug. equiv and weigh about 1 kg more.

Hmmmm this is the dilemma. My daughter catches the bus to/from school and it can get pretty crowded and 'lively' in there. Obviously she'll have a proper bag but I don't think a delicate, superslim laptop is going to be robust enough to survive very long. And there's the weight problem too as she also has to lug around a bagfull of books, sports kit etc. Nothing will be perfect of course, but I appreciate your insider tips. No decision made yet so we'll see.
