I would also recommend lunarpages, I've been really satisfied with them.

What about an SMF forum? I like it and it works well.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to look into SMF, never heard of it before.

I started out with PHPBB and in my opinion it is comparable to the ones you have to pay for. it has a clean look, it's well organized and once you get brave enough to start playing around with it there are alot of fun modifications you can add.

I've run websites before. I always had great service from inmotionhosting, so I'd recommend them. PHPBB software is good to use too.

    ^Thanks, Sarzy.

Any of you run into legal issues that required a lot of lawyer's fees?

No, I've been threatened a couple of times by ex members, and I've been contacted by businesses to remove links before(I run a freebie forum and some businesses get a little pissed if a link is posted on a freebie site) so I just remove the link promptly and apologize profusely. lol Aside from that I haven't had any problems. It's not a controversial site at all, The members all get along really well.

Nope. I don't think you need to worry too much about that. It all depends on your site content, obviously. My sites weren't gossip sites. Gossip sites are much more likely to come across legal problems than the type of site you are looking to make. If you keep a good eye on the post content on your forum you should be fine.

This surprises me: wouldn't the business want more publicity and more possible customers, whether or not its info is posted on a freebie site?

The big name brand businesses don't care, it's the small businesses that get overwhelmed with freebie requests that get upset about it(which is understandable). They will offer a free sample to gain customers but then suddenly their websites are bombarded by people just wanting the freebie, they aren't prepared for that and it costs them money to send them out etc.
