Any one of the various Linux flavors are free. Go here DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. to read up on them and pick one that fits what you want to do. Ubuntu is very popular and Windows like.

Yeah Linux is the way to go. Good solid OS and free. But totally customizable. But if you are moving from Windows to Linux. Ubuntu is the way to go
