Default Windows XP going really sloooooooow

Everyone I know (in Oz at least) is having real problems with a very slow internet. Doesn't matter if it's ADSL, cable or whatever, we are all having the same aggro. It's fine for a while and then...it..........slows...............down to the point it almost freezes and then, mysteriously returns to normal again after a re-boot or just by waiting an hour or so. It can't be a virus on my PC because everyone is having the same problem. I spoke to my tame tekky and he said that Microsoft are doing some kind of upgrade on their XP/internet interface whatever that means.

Now I'm thinking the real reason is that Microsoft wants us all to upgrade (HA!) to the pile of poo that is Vista. Cynical, moi?

MS just released SP3 for XP. That might be the problem. If you haven't already updated to it. You might try that. You should be able to get it here

I've got some pretty hefty firewalls installed so I don't think it's ingested a nasty but then again they always seem to slip through. It's running OK today (Sunday) so we'll see. Thanks for the help guys.

I personally haven't had any problems with SP3. But my computer was doing a similar thing before I downloaded and installed it.

Check to see if you have automatic updates turned on. My problem was, windows was trying to download SP3 by itself and my firewall was stopping the download. Making my PC really slow

Now that's much more likely to be the problem. I will give it a go. Thanks!

If you haven't defragged in a while, might want to try that too.

I run XP and don't have any of those same issues. Microsoft operating systems do require more care and feeding than a lot of people realize, though. Keeping them running at their optimum performance levels requires effort. Sucks, but what can you do? (Mac OS sucks and so does Linux.)

Go to Start Menu, Control Panel, there should be something in there called Automatic Updates. Personally, I switched mine to, Notify me but don't automatically download or install. But since installing SP3 I've had no problems.

I posted in the virus sticky thread, a link to a malware cleaning program that has worked really well. Malwarebytes.org it doesn't run in the background so you have to start it manually, it will take a while for a complete scan and does hog while it runs BUT so far it has cleaned up things nicely and cleans out the adware/spyware stuff that slows things down.
Don't worry about what other people think. They don't do it very often.
