Default Flat Screen, Plasma TV's

I'm not as up as I should be on my TV technology. I walked thru a store with all their TV's on. Some pictures were amazing clear, some just okay. It's probably just me, but I'm not loving those rectangular screens. Everybody seems wide and squished. I didn't get a big picture feeling except for the ones that were 50".

Do you have one and like it better than a flat screen standard tv?

If you're looking at a flat screen, get an LCD flat screen, not plasma. Plasma creates too much ghosting when things are moving onscreen. LCD's are nice and crisp.

Also, if people look wide and squished on a rectangular wide-screen, then it's not on the right setting. If the movie or tv show isn't filmed widescreen, there's a setting you can put your tv on where black bars will be on the sides, squishing the picture back to how it should be.

The crisp picture might have been in high definition.

Looking for a new tv 2 years ago made me feel really old and stupid. Back in my day, after I was finished walking to school barefoot in the snow uphill both ways, my only dilemma in buying a tv was deciding how big it should be. Now you've got your LCD, and plasma, and flatscreens, and various dimensions, and high definition, and tuners, and DVRs and that's just getting started because then you've got to decide if you want satellite or cable, and even if your tv is high definition-ready, that doesn't mean you're actually going to SEE anything hi def on it until you do some tap dancing and gawd help your ass when you go to hook everything up. Alcohol helps.

You might as well get a high def LCD flatscreen with high Dpi (resolution) because more and more channels will be going high def anyway.

^^^I think that's what we have.

We pay like an extra $5 a month to the satellite company to get high definition channels. The difference in the picture is amazing.

Yeah, I think I meant Hi-Def. The lions on the tv looked 3D. I understand about the wide screen and black bars, but I still feel antiquated because I like the feeling of a big square tv. I don't watch tv really (got rid of cable), so it's just for movies. I always liked those 36" analog tv screens. I searched, but they really aren't being made anymore.

What's a good price for an LCD, 42"? US dollars....2000? 1500?

You'll be surprised how much you don't notice the rectangular shape once the movie starts.

Also the bigger it is, the cooler it is

LCD screens are supposed to be the best (only slightly) and they're said to last up to 20 years! although technology changes so quickly who's gonna have an LCD screen for that long?!
