    Default Gmail housekeeping

My main Gmail box is full to bursting even without the obvious spam and other crap (I'm looking at you Facebook notifications). It needs a massive clear out (2000+ emails! gulp ) but I can't find a way to edit it by selecting the ones I want to keep and then bin the rest. I can do it one by one which will take forever, or I can delete them all which is obviously no good either. Ideas?

Hmm, I was in the same pickle. I went into the "configure inbox" setting and set up my tabs. There are several options such as primary, social (Facebook, pinterest, twitter), promotions (which are from sites you've expressed interest in ordering from or you have ordered from), Forums, and I think there may be one or two others. Anyway, once you do that, google works it's magic and moves everything around for you. If something is in your promotions tab and you want it in the primary, you can move it and have the email delivered to that tab of the inbox. When you open your gmail, the first tab you see is your primary email. All the other tabs are listed at the top of the page and you can easily switch back and forth.

Yep, AND go into your Facebook pages and remove the notifications so you won't get any emails every time someone farts.

Thanks for the ideas but I want to delete probably 90% of this crap, not file it away somewhere.

    ^^^
say you want to delete all the facebook notifications, click on one of those messages, select the email address, and paste it into the search bar, that will make all the facebook messages appear, and then all you have to do is select them all and delete. do the same thing for all the other messages you want to delete.

You want to click on that drop-down menu highlighted by my green circle. That will let you select all your messages. You should then be able to delete them all, or de-select the few you want to keep and bin the rest.

It might be one page at a time, yes. But then you can just do that again on every page. I don't know if there's a faster way.

i wish there was a faster way. Its funny, Gmail spam lets you delete all at once, but not the mail you get in the regular inboxes
