The Facebook jacket that can give you a real hug when someone likes you online

If you've ever felt a 'like' on Facebook wasn't quite real enough, a US designer has unveiled a jacket that hugs the wearer every time they receive one.

Designed by MIT student Melissa Chow, the 'Like-A-Hug' is a wearable social media vest that allows for hugs to be given via Facebook, bringing us closer despite physical distance.

The vest inflates when friends 'Like' a photo, video, or status update on the wearer's wall.

The vest inflates when friends 'Like' a photo, video, or status update on the wearer's wall, which the inventors say allows us to 'feel the warmth, encouragement, support, or love that we feel when we receive hugs'.

    A TRILLION LIKES

Facebook recently revealed that since the site first began, its billion members have 'liked' over 1.13 trillion items on the social network.

It also revealed 140.3 billion friend connections have been made, 219 billion photos shared and more than 300 million photos are uploaded uploaded daily.

Its creator says this 'allows us to feel the warmth, encouragement, support, or love that we feel when we receive hugs.

Hugs can also be sent back to the original sender by squeezing the vest and deflating it.

'The project was done as an exercise and exploration in shape display,' said Miss Chow.

'We came up with the concept over a casual conversation about long-distance relationships and the limitations of video chat interfaces like Skype.

'The concept of telepresence arose, and we toyed with the idea of receiving hugs via wireless technology.

The jacket can automatically inflate to hug the wearer when a like is received via a mobile phone

    'The result was Like-A-Hug.

'Connecting it to Facebook conceptually was simply a way to explore how social media might push past the traditional graphic user interface.'

Air pockets inside the jacket inflate when the wearer's mobile phone sends a signal a page has been liked.

Friends can also return a hug via the system - assuming their friends are wearing their Facebook jackets.

First, it's ugly. Second, the people hugging it back look "special." Third, if you need a coat and/or facebook to receive affection, you need to re-evaluate your interpersonal skills. You may be an asshole.

    The fuck?

Well if someone's gonna be this big a loser why not go the whole nine and make underwear that gives you a cock rub or a clit flick? Fuck a hug. I can get that from my mother.

When I see anything about Facebook I think of this:

The IT Crowd | Friendface | Channel 4 - YouTube

The Jacket could be a fun thing though. I could see myself lurking with a pin at hand to burst the inflatable jacket of friendship.
