Default Thousands Of Women Given Leaky, Toxic Breast Implants

Recently we've seen an uptick in stories about people injecting everything from non-medical silicone to cement into various body parts they'd like to see bigger. Usually, these procedures are performed by people who don't even play doctors on TV, but in France, tens of thousands of women wound up with a toxic chemical in their body after having a legitimate cosmetic surgery procedure.

In France more than 30,000 women have received defective breast implants in the past decade. The Guardian reports that the French company Poly Implant Prosthesis (PIP) was one of the world's leading producers of silicone implants and thousands of people all over the world used its products. Then last year, it was discovered that the company was trying to save money by using industrial silicone instead of medical-grade silicone in breast implants.

As if that wasn't enough, the company also used weak casings that are more likely to rupture or leak than those used in other implants.

Four women who had the implants got cancer, and two have died. It's unclear if the disease was caused by the implants, but the women are still living with the knowledge that there are bags on their chest filled when a chemical intended for computer parts that could pop at any minute.

Yesterday women who used PIP products held a demonstration outside the French health ministry to demand that the government do more to help the victims, including paying for removal of the implants. Since the implants were some of the cheapest on the market, many of the women who used them had scraped together money for the surgery and can't afford to have them taken out.

As is often the case with botched plastic surgery, the women say they're being treated like the problem is their fault. One woman in the crowd yelled, "We're sick of being dismissed as bimbos." While the women's reasons for getting implants have no bearing on their current situation, the fact is that some of these supposed "bimbos" are breast cancer survivors. Dominique Poitou, who received a PIP implant during a breast reconstruction after cancer treatment, said:
"It's very hard to rebuild my life. We feel judged, we feel that we're not taken seriously because it's linked to cosmetic surgery. That's unfair. This scandal is criminal. You wouldn't implant this type of material into animals, let alone women."
If the implants had been put into animals there'd be no reason to judge them, but people feel they don't have to take this situation seriously because it's about a bunch of vain women who wanted bigger boobs.

And a lot of them look bad even when they're not toxic.

Most getting implants probably already have nice looking breasts. I agree about ones who had mastectomies, so I can understand the want for implants. I can also understand if some one has flap jack boobs. So it depending on the situation, would make it ok to get im in my opinion.

I want implants but lately i'm just seeing stories of what can go wrong and the line "the women are still living with the knowledge that there are bags on their chest filled when a chemical intended for computer parts that could pop at any minute" really doesn't comfort me.

Perhaps it's a sign from the universe.

True that. There's a reason silicone was banned in the U.S. for 14 years. Then the FDA re-approved them and suddenly women can't wait to get their hands on the silicone instead of using the safer saline.. thinking that silicone feels "more real." Newsflash, they don't. Men/women can feel the implant regardless of what they are filled with!

Glad we don't live in France.. and glad PIP is banned in the U.S. too!

Try something other than an implant. I saw a program with Suzanne Somers having fat taken from her tummy, to where her breast used to be.

Default France May Pay To Replace Leaky Implants, But Only For Cancer Patients, Not Bimbos

Last week some of the roughly 30,000 French women who received faulty breast implants in the past decade protested outside the French health ministry, demanding that the government pay for the removal of the implants. Several of the women have developed cancer, and today officials said that if a link is established between the disease and the implants the government will pay to have them removed. They'll even spring for the cost of replacing the implants, but only if the women are breast cancer survivors, not skanks who wanted bigger boobs.

Until the company collapsed in scandal last year, Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) was the third largest producer of implants in the world. Then it was discovered that the French company was using cheap non-medical grade silicone in implants and contstructing casings out of sub-par material that's more likey to rupture. It's estimated that as many as 300,000 women worldwide may have the implants. AFP reports that now eight cases of cancer have been discovered in women with PIP implants. Most have breast cancer and one has died.

French health officials say they haven't established a causal link between the implants and the cancer, so there is "no urgent health risk." However, the government has acknowledged that isn't all that comforting to women wondering if toxins are leaking from their chests and slowly killing them, and says it will "announce an action plan" by the end of the week. Sources say that officials have already decided to order that all of the implants be removed on the government's dime.

The liklihood that the procedures will be covered by state health insurance is a positive development, but we're talking about breast here, so there has to be some kind of slut-shaming kicker. One protester said the women's complaints aren't being taken seriously because they're "being dismissed as bimbos," and today Jean-Yves Grall, France's director general for health, showed that isn't true for the roughly 20 percent who got the implants during reconstructive surgery after breast cancer. He explained that while the government will cover the cost of removal for all of the women, only breast cancer patients will have replacement surgery covered.

Laurent Lantieri, a cosmetic surgeon who's on the health department's committee, says, "This does not shock me ... It is not up to society, in a time of crisis, to pay for a new implant for aesthetic reasons." The move definitely isn't surprising, since most insurance companies will cover reconstructive surgery but not elective breast enhancement. However, it's frustrating that the government is saying it won't pay for a bunch of silly, superficial women to keep their breasts the same size they've been for years. Those harlots really should have thought of the potential consequences before getting implants made by a company that the government hadn't been properly regulating for at least a decade.

^^ i was wondering who's going to pay for the surgeries.
is the company bankrupt? the article said it "collapsed". is that meant literally, as in "went bankrupt"? if not, the government should sue the hell out of them later and demand damages (so should the women).

they already survived the disease and now they have to live in fear again. horrible.
