We were assigned "Clan" in a seminar I took at college called "Critiques of Popular Anthropological Literature" I tried to mask my eye roll but the professor saw me and asked if had read the book already. I told the class that we all read it in 7th grade and passed it around on the school bus to giggle at the dirty parts.

Re: What Are You Currently Reading??
I just started reading some true trash reading this morning. One of my professors told me that Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk was an interesting read, if you can stomach it. I convinced my dad to pick it up for me this weekend, and it's definitely disturbing. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get through the whole thing. The first story was gross enough for me ( Guts, only read if you have a very strong stomach and aren't easily disturbed), and I've heard it only gets worse from there.

Re: What Are You Currently Reading??
That's Marguerite Duras - Four novels. I'm currently reading
"Moderato Cantabile," about a man and a woman reunited
at a crime scene.

Currently rereading "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by JOhn Perkins. Facinating what our government has done around the world. No wonder we're hated.

I read it 15 years ago for school and didn't quite get it. But I have problems with Duras style anyway, I tried The Lover and Hiroshima Mon Amour and couldn't get into those either. You are a brave man

Re: What Are You Currently Reading??
Just started 'Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin' about four great female writers/personalities of the '20's. Dorothy Parker, etc. anyone? Fab stuff.

I'm reading "Bitter is the New Black" by Jen Lancaster and it is hysterical! I don't want to finish it!

Re: What Are You Currently Reading??
I just read "What to Eat" by Marion Nestle. It wasn't as good as her more political books about how the US government and meat/dairy/biotech lobbyists are preventing food safety and destroying our planet.
"The Kite Runner" was also a good one I just read. Slow starting, but it really was thought-provoking without providing any easy answers.
"Prep" by Curtis Sittenfeld was also great, like a modern-day Catcher in the Rye. But I can't really recommend "Journey to the East" by Herman Hesse because it was so boring and somewhat predictable.
Can you tell I just buy random cheap books from the thrift store?

Re: What Are You Currently Reading??
I´m reading "100 years of solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
He´s Colombian and won a Literature Nobel Prize for this book, and it is incredibly fantastic, one of the best I ever read.
it´s amazing when you read something really good how these authors manage to go way beyond the most awesome creativity. He´s a genius.

Don't you just love/hate it when you get your hands on a book that makes you feel that way? It's almost heartbreaking when you're on the last few pages and you know it's going to end soon.

Oh, that's such a fantastic book. I took a class on magical realism in grad school and read this book (supposedly in Spanish, but I confess to cheating and reading it in English after struggling). It's great. Have you tried reading "Like Water for Chocolate"? It's another fantastic book, I think Laura Esquivel?
