Pledged is going back to the library, unfinished. I can't stomach another woman mooing with the herd.

Back to the court of Charles II: Amazon.com: The Perfect Royal Mistress: A Novel: Diane Haeger: Books

    It focuses on Nell Gwynne.

I've had a soft spot for Nell ever since I heard this story:

During the Catholic panic of the 1670's Nell's carriage was encircled by a mob who thought it belonged to Louise de Keroualle and threatened to overturn it. Nell stuck her head out the window and cried out 'Pray, good people, be civil, I am the Protestant whore'. The mob laughed, blessed her and let her go on her way.

    "Scar Tissue" by Anthony Kiedis

So amazing. I've seen their "Behind the Music" but this book puts it all in perspective. I'm truly surprised he never succumbed to his addictions. He started so young that his tolerance was ridiculous.

I did not. Books (unless they're needed professionally) aren't on my budget now, so I'm dependent on my library system. I'm part of the suburban one already, which didn't have Twilight even in its system! Can you believe it? The system connects 6-7 libraries throughout the 'burbs, and that's how I get my books through email interlibrary loan requests.

I was about to sign up with the city library system, since I'm close to the border; I think it would only cost me $10, so it would be worth it. The problem is, I actually have to make a point to drive there lol. Caretaking for my folks has gone clusterfuck crazy, so joining the city system is on my to-do list. I'm positive they'll have it.

I can't resist, you know - you GR people talk about a certain perfume enough, I get a sample; you GR people talk about a certain book enough, I have to read it; and so on. Y'all are a bad influence on me, seeing as how I'm all prone to peer pressure.

That's such a good one! Thanks for sharing it. It's funny how even through the centuries, she's having the same effect on people. her personality reminds me so much of my gram.

It's interesting to see Holloway and Haeger recount the same stories of her so differently. The book I mentioned above, Haeger's Perfect Royal Mistress, was a very good read. Haeger did a better job of making the "supporting cast" come alive, especially Buckingham and Buckhurst. She turns Charles Hart into a rapist as opposed to Holloway's love story.

Overall, I wouldn't say one author is "better" than another. Holloway is more a visceral writer who gets into the skin of her characters better, whereas Haeger is much more analytical. Haeger's storytelling is telling, not showing, and it's a cerebral thing. Different styles.

I'm taking a break from reading about English royalty to read Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha.

^ I read Memoirs of a Geisha years ago, couldn't put it down. I didn't like the ending but aside from that it was a captivating story. Movie was shit though.

I'm reading "Taming the Beast" by Emily McGuire, and I find it very interesting so far. The book focuses on a girl who at age fourteen gets seduced by her teacher and starts behaving in a self-destructive nymphomanic manner after he leaves her once his wife finds out about her affair. A couple of years later they are reunited and the affair starts again. I'm about halfway through the book, and I'm looking forward to read the rest. Sometimes the subject matter is a bit touchy, the sex scenes between the teen and the 30-something guy made me a bit uncomfortable, but it if you don't mind reading a story that has a controversail touch, I recommend this book.

I read Antonia Fraser's Royal Charles ages ago, and really liked it. Decent historical non-fiction. Nell just always seemed so 'real woman' compared to Castelmaine. She just took him on, and didn't demand all the things that his other women asked for and got. She got shafted, but was a decent person.

I'm currently reading the new Irvine Welsh- Dirt. I like it, it's not his greatest- but I like him in general

Peer pressure! HAHAHA. I have actually read a lot of books just from hearing the GR folks talk about them/recommend them.

As for the bookstore, I used to buy so many freaking books but now I pretty read them all through the library. I get a booklist at the beginning every month of the new releases and will reserve them at my library. It works out well.

And that does suck they dont carry Twilight. But trust me, the writing will make you feel icky! LOL And not in a good way (well, if you end up not liking it, as I didn't).

One of my guilty pleasures I've read it many times.

I just finished the Twilight series (liked the first 3 but the last one was a total piece of crap), moved on the the Brotherhood series by J.R.Ward. Pretty good for vampire romance, at least these have some real smut.

Also read Dean Koontz The Darkest Evening of the Year. I hated it, hate hate hate. Stupid book a total flushing of 8 bucks.

Now I'm reading Karen Moning's Fever books, just started the first one. So far not bad.
