I'm reading a bunch of magazines. Classes start in a week, & I'm an English major, so I'll have tons of reading then.

I'm in the middle of March by Geraldine(?) something. Pulitzer Prize winner. It's the story of the father of the March sisters/mother from "Little Women". So far I love it - beautifully elegant writing and very descriptive without being too sugary. Also very interesting historical details about the Civil War and the background on the issues behind it, ie, slavery and abolitionism. I belong to a really cool book club that chooses some excellent reads from all across the spectrum. NOT like Oprah's irritating choices which always have An Agenda.

Iain M. Banks - The Player of Games. It's sci-fi set in the author's Culture universe. I'd never read a Culture novel before but I just love this book and I'll be looking for more once I finish it.

Biography of Gogol. I'm going to turn into a Russian soon if I don't get off this Gogol kick.

Right now I'm reading 'What Remains'. It's a biography of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his cousin Anthony Radziwill written by Anthony's wife, Carole. It's really sad as it chronicles Anthony and Carole's last summer with John Jr and Carolyn before their tragic plane crash. So far it's been worth every penny. She writes about them with a lot of fondness and love. John sounds like such a nice guy.

I'm reading Anderson Cooper's Dispatches from the Edge. It's excellent. One of those you can't put down. Anderson has a knack for writing, but I'd prefer he stick to CNN for purely selfish reasons!

I'm still on my Russian kick. Just started 'Stalin: the red tsar's court'. Absolutely fantastic so far. Perfect for anyone interested in Russian history.

my last russian kick was a bulgakov obsession but i'm really curious to read gogol, i've heard a lot of good things about him and still haven't gotten round to reading anything. what do you recommend?
as for moody i loved the ice storm as well and i also really enjoyed his memoir 'the black veil' which is unlike most memoirs. i've had way too much work lately so i'm still on the diviners but still loving it so far.

'Diary of a Madman' is great. It's that story plus several more, and is not only extremely funny but surprisingly modern. REally great stuff. I'll check out 'The Black Veil'....what makes it different?
