The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Set in early 1960s Mississippi about the shocking racism that still prevailed, specifically from a bunch of white cunty bitches towards their black "help". The author has based a lot of it on her own experiences growing up in that environment and while it's fiction I am sure most of it is based on real events and people. A real eye opener.

I read this as well, and it was wonderful. It was even better on audiobook, where they get different narrators for different character's perspectives.

I can highly recommend all Tim Winton's books. He writes so elegantly and you feel that every word is carefully chosen yet it's not at all stodgy or pretentious.

i finished 'breath' on the plane. i'm still not sure how i feel about the ending but overall i loved it. and i agree with you, he writes beautifully yet unpretentiously. i want to read more.

right now i'm reading microserfs by douglas coupland. i started ages ago and didn't finish because i was reading too many books at once but this time i'm sticking with it.
