Speaking of not playing it safe: What about Kiran Desai? She might be a possibility, too.

Sorry for the double post but the edit button has gone missing.

    The stupid fucks!!!

    Orhan Pamuk

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2006 is awarded to the Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk

“who in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures”.
I'm first going to Connecticut to console poor Philip Roth and then I'm going to the Swedish Academy to start banging heads. I guess the only good thing is that the fabulous Mr. Roth will have to stay alive awhile longer and write some more great books in order to get that damn prize. Fuckers!!

As well you should, missy! I'll give Mr. Pamuk a try as well. Anybody who can piss off thier screwy government enough to land in jail deserves a chance.

    Indian author, here you go:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiran_Desai

She wrote the Inheritance of Loss, which is brilliant. Won the Man Bookers. Rushdie praises her all over the place, and he's MY favorite author, so I listened to him and read some of her books. She rocks.
