I dunno... I mean, with the internet and everything, anybody that wants to know how to build a bomb can find a way, even without The Anarchist Cookbook.
ETA: I'm a big ole nerd, though, and I just like to know/learn stuff.

You are right about that..... (the internet) ANd i l myself like to know/learn stuff also and I would bet most people who read it feel the same way. But those true anarchists and that small group of wierdos ( not that anarchists aren't) that could be planning to blow up something with people in it just makes me more uncomfortable since Columbine, 9/11, Oklahoma city, but we do live here in America and I really believe in the constitution, so I donot think it should be banned just wish it was on a really high shelf where not just anyone could get ahold of it.........
Ho --do you know why Catcher is considered such a bad book?? Oh and the Sleeping Beauty books are some OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES but only for adults.......

I hear ya! And, no, I can't think of why 'Catcher' should be banned. It was my favorite book, and probably still is! Even though I haven't read it since junior high. I remember being so blown away by that book. I refused to believe that Holden Caulfield wasn't a real boy, Salinger was that good.
God, I love Salinger. And Kurt Vonegut, too. Jr, that is.

I know there are lots of nutcases and people who are influenced to do bad things, but I think anything could push these type of people over the edge. And as far as offensive material Don't read the damn thing. I cannot ever see why a parent would want their childrens schools to limit what they read unless it was pornography or something just hideous, but ban because of a word. I will never get it.

My best guess for Catcher in the Rye is the overuse of the word damn, and his general attitude, not exactly uplifting for the precious kiddies.
Huck Finn I'm truly stumped about, don't know why that would be on the list.
The Color Purple is one of the 500+ books on the list for having homosexual themes. Who cares that it is about women finding their inner power, she sleeps with a woman so its BAD!
Could someone tell me why To Kill a Mockingbird is on there? Isn't that one of the most loved books of all time or something?

The dreaded "n word". Even though it is used within a historical and social context that renders it necessary to tell the story. How on earth a book could deal with racial prejudice and use politically correct language is beyond me.

Forgot about that, the banning is stupid though. It's still a good book. Kinda interesting that Chicago made it the first "One Chicago, One Book" (or whatever they called that program) a few years back if it is on this list.

Guys, put down those awful books and drink the kool aid. You're not going to grow up without drinking the kool aid, so you might as well get started.

^^ Not to be a dumbass but is that a Jim Jones reference or did that just go over my head??? Grimm you are freaking hilarious... I remembered that in Huck Finn the N word is used also, and I believe that was why it was banned. THe Color Purple is so good i can't believe that a little woman love is a reason to be banned, Love is love and god the character needed love so damn bad it just kinda breaks my heart to think about it... way too advanced for young kids, and maybe even so for h.s. but geez they hear alot worse amongst themselves... I bet no teacher wanted to teach it, as sexually retarded as we are here in America....anyways thanks for the answers miss ho and No day, I still donot get Catcher in the Rye if it was the use of damn how dumb, I think I also read it was Holden's general attitude, and if it is that geez why isn't Bart Simpson banned???? That was a fantastic book and who hasn't felt that they just donot give a rats ass about anything at least once in their teenage years..... Twitchy ITA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll take my grape Kool Aid with gin, like the older gentlemen of my youth on their front porches, not cyanide.
Censoring books in this manner may lead to burning books in bonfires at night, with rallies and cheerleaders.

I'm going to get my kids each and every one of these books that I don't already own and tell them they can't have any of mummy's 'special' kool aid until they're done reading their way through the list.

Thanks. And you know what? I just found, in an old shop, a glass kool aid pitcher EXACTLY like the one in your picture. That is really going to come in handy during banned book reading week here at the old homestead.
