As a Catholic Christian, I think this is disappointing. And I also don't like the blanket statements and stereotypes about Christians. If you replace the word "Christian" in several of these posts with "black," "gay," "Muslim," "female," "Jewish," or any other word describing a group of people, I don't think anyone would be as tolerant of the mockery or derogatory remarks.

My experience with Catholicism is that it is a religion based on LOVE. Love for God, love for yourself, and love for others. I have never in my experience in the Church experienced anything remotely resembling or encouraging hatred towards any group of people.

Religion is a choice. Black, gay, female, isn't.

Secondly, the Catholic church has been and continues to be a source of unspeakable oppression and evil. They've destroyed whole civilizations and molested countless generations of children.

You'd have to be historically blind not to actually know what has and continues to go on.

Blind, or willfully ignorant. I mean, Anne Rice has been a Catholic longer than you so maybe the "new catholic smell" wore off some time ago.

My main problem with the church stems from when we visited the Vatican while on a trip to Italy, the place is dripping in gold and riches and yet so many of it's followers are literally dirt-poor. It left a bad taste and really ruined the beauty of the place. (I'm not religious, I just like visiting churches for the architecture and art).

Ann Rice seems to be a person of extremes, she threw herself head-first into her religion and then when it wasn't what she thought she had signed up for she publically renounces most of it. I do wonder if she wants to jump back on the Vampire bandwagon but she might be a little late since her vampires can't have sex...and I don't think Eric Northman would be nearly as attractive if he was a big viking eunuch
I smile because I have no idea what's going on

I think she was pretty religious before the death of her daughter - that is when she wrote Interview with the Vampire. Then she became born again and went even nuttier but Anne Rice tends to have rants every couple of years. She started an entertaining rant on amazon that caused a major flamewar with the vampire fans and the chrisitan ones LOL.

I suspect her recent stuff isn't selling very well also she needs a fucking editor - she refuses to have one says she doesn't need one. On her Facebook page she said she wont go back to the vampires but then a few years ago she entertained a crossover book with recent stuff and Lestat but she later recanted so who knows. But hopefully she will get back to writing good books but I hope she gets a bloody editor. Descriptions of pages and pages of a fucking tree made me stop reading the last few vampire books.

^ Must have been quite the tree.

She almost reminds me of Laurell K Hamilton. All I ever hear anymore is how badly she needs an editor. I guess that and the fact that they write vampires is the only simularity so Ill stop there.

Substitute Christianity for Catholicism and I'm right there with you. We are coming into a post-modern era and the church is getting ready to be reinvented. Christian writers like Tony Campolo, Brian McLaren, and Rob Bell are leading the movement. I think in the next 20 years ago you will see a big shift in the attitude of Christians, including restoring the earth and tolerance of diversity. Do you realize that Jesus never said a single word about homosexuality? I think it's quite significant that he never spoke on it. Must not be important. There is a renewal/revivial beginning in the Christian church with more emphasis on the teachings of Jesus. I honestly do not know how we've gotten so far away from it. Must be human nature to want to feel superior in some way to others.

^^ Jesus preached two things - loving God and treating other people the way God has treated us.

If you honestly can love the way God does then everything else falls into place.

I think Rice has misplaced passion.

As for the Catholics and their errors - where there is man there is greed. Through out history the Catholic church has confused the message of religion and the message of loving God.

I'm not going to blame all the ills of life on Christians, not when the Turks are still treating their own citizens like they are second class if they aren't Muslim.

The history of religion has been bloody but it's not the way Jesus taught us to live.

Not that anyone cares but I made a major blunder in siding with the Turks a few months back, seems I listened to a friend who is Turkish and didn't do my own homework. After doing my homework I'm down right embarrassed. I have also been exchanging information with my Armenian friend of 5 years.. I told her of my blunder. geez

The world is a complicated place which would be made a lot easier if we could practice loving each other.

One way you might want to put that into practice is by not offending "the Catholics" with your blanket statements about how misguided they are.

my family choses to be Catholic. I was responding to the above post on the greed of the Catholic church. Take from my post what you wish. Personally I don't think Jesus intended for there to be "religions" No where in the Bible does it say you have to be Catholic, Baptist, Methodist... and so on, to get into heaven. He just says love God and to love one another.

Yep that tree was described to an inch to its life LOL

Funny you should mention LKH - she also doesn't use an editor. In her current contract she has a clause for no editorial/revision input and it shows. I stopped reading her books because they are badly written porn although from what I have read about her recent books she's trying to tone that down but its too little too late. There was a rumour that her first husband who she modelled after Richard that he helped her out with the first 8 books or so when they split up you had the angsty annoying Richard and the books quality going down hill.

Plus you have fantastic Urban Fantasy authors who are writing excellent books like Nalini Singh, Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews.

Thanks I'll give them a shot because after the 7th book Laurel Hamilton just got to darn weird. I'm concerned that C. Harris will too - Sookie sleeping with faries?

about the topic - how can you quit Christianity and believe in Jesus Christ? Kind of a oxy moron. Christian means "Christ like" It doesn't mean believing in or man made religions.

I think she meant to say she quit religion. Shes still a believer in Jesus. In fact, last I checked her Facebook she was posting many videos from people in response to her quitting and her own responses. She seems like a nice lady.

I actually have only read up to the fourth Laurell K Hamilton book. Its on the nineteenth now and Ive skipped ahead and read some of that. So many men, so many descriptions, they all want to have sex with her and each other? Makes no sense. And the saddest part is as one reads that the only comfort is that theres more than likely a mass orgy after the play. I havent made it that far so I dont know. Im just going on what Ive heard, all sex no plot. Which makes that actually rather depressing. I could only stomach the first Sookie novel from Charlaine Harris. I didnt enjoy it and found Sookie to be a rather annoying main character. I might go back to that series one day but Im not sure. I enjoy Patricia Briggs and have read the first Mercy Thompson novel. I have been meaning to check out Kate Daniels and that Magic series for years but havent gotten to it yet. And Nalini Singh, havent heard of them but looks good on Amazon so I might check that out as well. Thanks for the recommendations.

And to get this back on topic, I havent been able to finish the first Vampire Chronicles book. Ive been trying for years but never any luck. I have heard that Anne Rices religious books were decent as well. Have I heard wrong?

Seriously I am still having problems with this christian friend of mine. He is the biggest hypocrite and I just can't swallow that. I can't go into too many details here but thankfully I done a bit of research of my own and this site has been pretty informative for me. I was unaware of the many rapes etc in the bible that has been written about and encouraged!

^ omg speaking of christian freaks, i went to my high school reunion this weekend and 3 (blonde crystal blue eyed) of them showed up all sober and disproving annoyingly of the debauchery that was taking place stupid bitch who's already had 5 kids (we're 28 mind you) especially! i wanted to slap her, i overhead her saying something like "stay true to the gospel" to this recovering bulimic/tanorexic girl i was friends w/ in junior high but became a snotty ass bitch in high school who i now can't stand cuz she's always using her illness as a crutch and excuse not to grow up and get on with her life....i was like OH PULEASE! (though she did confess to me that her purse was full of meds and i was so tempted to go steal it off the chair she left it on, damnit) then i offended another one i used to be friends with when i gave him a dirty look after he told me he just met his wife earlier this year and they got engaged a month after knowing each other. im sorry but that is not normal and yeah, im gonna roll my eyes at your dumbass.

whatever im back in l.a. with my fellow sodomites.
