this. How low can the bar be set? There's a difference between a badly written book and writing that wouldn't get you a D in a high school creative writing class.

Yes. It's one thing if you're talking about kids or adolescents who might learn to love reading by starting with crap like Twilight and then graduate to real literature when they're older, but if you're forty and all you're reading is dreck like this, there is no hope for you.

So glad I read those excerpts - not only is her commentary hilarious, but now I know I can avoid reading this book because I can't stand books written in the present tense. I put down Angela's Ashes after one page for that reason. I just can't do it (she says).

The writing in this series is no where near as bad as the crap Stephanie Meyers spewed. I think the author is British and sometimes the words she chooses ("fetch me some water" or "does this please you") sound distinctly un-American. Given that this is about two people who live in Seattle, it's a weird disconnect. That said, I don't think her actual story telling is awful (redundant, yes!).

Stephanie Meyers not only managed to put out about 1,000 of pure mind polluting crap but she managed to hack away at the English language along the way.

I read a little bit of Heidi's blog linked at the end of the 'Fifty things that annoy me about 50 shades' article. It's pretty funny. Both these women write way better than the author of Fifty shades. Not that this is saying much for them. This book reads like something that was written by a C-in-English high schooler.

^I read the other blog, too, it was amusing as well. Most people write better than this woman, but then there is this.....

Saturday, June 30th 2012 The Writer Of 50 Shades Of Grey Is Making $1.34 Million A Week

Twilight fanfic writer turned New York Times best-selling author E.L. James is orgasming with her entire body weekly and it's not from reading her own book, that's for fucking sure. It's from reading her bank statement. As each week goes by, E.L. becomes a million dollars richer and she owes it all such beautiful poetry like this:
“Does this mean you’re going to make love to me tonight, Christian?” Holy shit. Did I just say that? His mouth drops open slightly, but he recovers quickly. “No, Anastasia it doesn’t. Firstly, I don’t make love. I fuck… hard. Secondly, there’s a lot more paperwork to do, and thirdly, you don’t yet know what you’re in for. You could still run for the hills. Come, I want to show you my playroom.” My mouth drops open. Fuck hard! Holy shit, that sounds so… hot. But why are we looking at a playroom? I am mystified. “You want to play on your Xbox?” I ask. He laughs, loudly. “No, Anastasia, no Xbox, no Playstation. Come."
    And:
“Christian, you had me at the meadow.”
Celebrity Net Worth (via EW) says that thanks to those exquisite words and millions of horny housewives not knowing about something called free online porn have helped E.L. sell over 20 million copies worldwide. E.L. takes 7% of every $14 paperback sold and another 25% of every $10 ebook downloaded. So they crunched those numbers together and figured out that this September she'll get a $20 million check from her publisher.
As I said before, I tried reading that mess and quickly realized that a better use for my fingers is to press play on hardcore online porn instead of turning the pages of that wreck. That shit is about as erotic as a dominatrix Rosie O'Donnell. But you know, E.L. got my money (because I'm a dumb sheeeeeeple) and so I guess she wins. Seriously, I should get beat for spending my money on that shit. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to open up my dusty Microsoft Word and write a trilogy about a society of spark vamps who have to beat the safe word out of each other in their capitol's annual Bondage Games.

Women's "erotica" (and I'm using that phrase loosely) is a big market due to the privacy of kindle.

Unfortunately, she's a Brit. How embarrassed am I?

E L James is a TV executive, wife and mother-of-two based in West London. Since early childhood she dreamed of writing stories that readers would fall in love with, but put those dreams on hold to focus on her family and her career. She finally plucked up the courage to put pen to paper with her first novel, Fifty Shades of Grey.

E L James is currently working on a new love story...

I thought that it started out being written by someone else as fan fiction & she wrote it into a book & made the money of it (more than a million a week. )

I read the blurb on the back and told her that as a sex assault victim I absolutely couldn't handle any book that had rape or the female character being a submissive in a sexually violent relationship. The bitch behind the counter then insisted to me that that these books weren't anything like that. You can imagine what I was dealing with, emotionally, from that very moment the female character fall flat on her face in the first meeting; the writing was on the wall, but I couldn't believe that the salesperson would have suggested such a book after I'd been so clear to her that I was even upset by the pro-violence/abusive relationship in the Twilight novels.

I got one-third through 50 Shades of Grey before I had to down xanax pills with some beers, and start a violent computer game, to get out an emotional tailspin. It had been like reading the Next Generation of Twilight, only where Twilight was metaphorical in portraying abuse as "love", 50 Shades is graphic. Is there any "erotica" being published that doesn't encourage woman to allow themselves to be used, abused or put themselves in harm's way? Because I have the awful suspicion that if I wrote a story along the lines of Twilight/50 Shades that rape=love, I might get published... but a well written story with an empowered female lead would be turned down as "too '90s".

I hate Stephanie Meyer. And I really, REALLY hate this new author. I want to OD on my alprazolam until this new abuse/rape=love/romance shit has played out. Has everyone taken a leave of absence from their sanity?!
if you think bdsm or him controling is abusive then you dont know anything. its not abuse or rape. its all on them agreeing to it.

Can I get an infraction, too, because I agree with you that sue_trask is an idiot.

Wow, your post is incredibly insensitive. It doesn't matter whether YOU or people who practice BDSM consider the portrayal in the book to be abusive. Kat Scorp found it upsetting to read. She perceived it as abusive and it reminded her of a traumatic event in her life. That's her experience. Who are you to question her reaction? I can't believe you would read that post and feel the urge to 'correct' her.

The last sentence proves my initial opinion of you.

If you can't understand that, due to the reasons given in her post that she found it upsetting, you are more idiotic than I took you for when I read the last sentence.
