Default Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth"

I've been in a massive book funk. Haven't had the motivation to crack one, even my favorites that I know I will love. A friend of mine recommended this book. I'm 100 pages in and absolutely adore it.

I didn't think it would be up my alley, but it hits the spot! Also, it's one of the only best sellers I have not been able to find in a thrift shop, which is a good sign.

OH DEAR LORD

This book is amazing. I read it in a day, it was so good. (It also helped I was on a very boring and wet holiday)
Once you've finished it go and get 'world without end' - it's a sequel of sorts and it's just as good.

eta-I like your point about the thrift shops. There are certain books which you ALWAYS see in those isn't there? Namely Dan Brown books.

I read it around Christmas and really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure if a humongous book about flying buttresses and building cathedrals (or one that's on The Oprah's snooty book list) would appeal to me, either, but it did. I've been working on Follett's follow up "World Without End" for a few weeks now. It's a good book, but I haven't had a lot of time to read, so I'm hoping I can finish it up this weekend. It's also set in Kingsbridge 200 years later and the main characters are the decendents of the ones in "Pillars of the Earth" - it might be worth checking out when you finish if you're enjoying POTE.

I'm about 100 pages until I finish this book. Am totally loving it! Just put World Without End on hold at the library.

I read this book 15 years ago. As a Medieval European History major in college, I was all over this book

On the other hand, I didn't care as much for "The World Without End". It felt a bit redundant to me.

My hubby was reading over my shoulder (rudeness!) and pointed to this thread to say that it's a really good book. This is a man who a)usually does books on tape b)takes forever to read a book and so gives up and c)forgets pretty much everything he's read. The fact that he remembers reading it and says it's a good book is saying something, lol.

Wow, it's been so long since I read this book, I think I might have to pick it up again.

I was about halfway through, and then real life stepped in. I just couldn't read anything depressing, no matter how good the book. I'm hoping to pick up where I left off soon...it has been a great journey thus far.

I love this book! I have it in the bookcase upstairs and have to read it every few years. It's a gooder!
