Default Did you know? Carolyn Keene (of Nancy Drew books) is a psuedonym

DD is not quite old enough to read the original Nancy Drew mysteries, but they have a series written for younger kids now, and I was excited to see that the author was Carolyn Keene. So I'm imagining this old lady in her 70's or 80's still writing Nancy Drew books for little girls, how sweet. So I thought, how old is she now? Come to find out, many people have written Nancy Drew books under the name Carolyn Keene for years, as the publisher would just hire random authors to write the books under the psuedonym.

I'm kind of let down. The Bungalow Mystery, The Secret of the Old Clock, and the Hidden Staircase were favorites as a girl.

I never knew that!! Always thought she was a real person and solo author. I loved that series.

Nancy Drew was one of my idols when I was young. She was able to drive with her friends and go visit her boyfriend in college. OVERNIGHT!! How cool was that!! She solved mysteries!!! Her car had a rumble seat!! I'll have to see if my mom still has my old books anywhere. I became a sleuth in those years...and my older sister became "Harriet the Spy".

I know, right! She had this convertible and she always dressed nicely too.

I read those blue Nancy Drew books too. No idea there was no real Carolyn Keene though.

I did; they re-released some of the originals several years ago with the original covers (eta printed on the book jackets), and they were on my wish list. I remember reading articles about this back then.

I loved Nancy Drew, I read the books all the time. The Hidden Staircase was one of my favourites for sure. I thought it was pretty well known Carolyn Keene was a pseudonym? The style of writing is very different in different books.

There's actually a great set of computer games based on the Nancy Drew mysteries. I played them when I was younger, I'd definitely recommend them for anyone with kids. Interesting, challenging, and educational. Nancy Drew Games | Official Site | Interactive Mystery Games Online

Yes, and her dad wrote the Hardy Boys series.

There have been other authors who wrote under the names Franklin Dixon & Carolyn Keene.

If I read them as an adult I'm sure I would have noticed the writing styles, but as young girl I did not notice. I really would like to pick a few up now though!

I loved them, too, growing up. Yes, I had heard that about Carolyn Keene--I think I read about it several years ago when they rebooted the book series (I think they might have added books or updated existing ones).

I loved Nancy Drew so much that I wrote a ND story for freshman comp at college--in mine George Fayne was an out lesbian.

    It was actually JK Rowling.
