Donald J. Sobol, Encyclopedia Brown Author, Dead at 87

Donald J. Sobol, known to legions of kids around the world as the man behind the boy detective book series Encyclopedia Brown, passed away last Wednesday in Miami. He was 87.

According to his son John, Sobol died of natural causes.

After being rejected over two-dozen times by various publishing houses, Sobol finally released the first of many Encyclopedia Brown books in 1963. Schoolchildren across America instantly bonded with the amateur sleuth — whose given name is Leroy — and his partner Sally Kimball, ensuring that Encyclopedia Brown titles would never be out of print.

Sobol's books have been translated into twelve languages, and earned the author a special Edgar Award in 1976.

All of God's children are not beautiful. Most of God's children are, in fact, barely presentable.
