Can anyone recommend any good Aussie or NZ writers?

Apart from Janet Frame, whom I already know of. I'm thinking of doing (in an undetermined future) my PhD thesis on insularity as seen through the scope of Anglophone literature, so any recommendations will be welcome. Thanks in advance

peter carey. he wrote 'oscar and lucinda'.

i quite like tim winton. i recommend 'breath' and 'cloudstreet'.

i also just read 'the slap' by christos tsiolkas and that was well written and entertaining.

I'd recommend anything by Tim Winton too. He writes beautiful, elegant, gentle prose and really captures the Australian landscape and character.

"Eucalyptus" by Murray Bail is also a superb novel.

Steve Toltz- A Fraction of the Whole

I like Tim Winton too.

maybe look at the shortlist and winners of the commonwealth writers' prize?

the last book i read on that list was lloyd jones' mister pip. it tells the story of a young girl who lives on bougainville during the civil war. mr. watts, a bit of a character, teaches her and the other kids by reading to them from the only book on the island, a worn copy of dickens' great expectations.

Thanks dear, I just found another online store where I can have it for cheap (cheap is the prime condition because I buy books, DVDs or CDs nearly every day).
