How to Understand the Difference Between Transgender, Cross Dresser and Drag Queen


Transgender is a state of being in which the apparent gender (usually determined at birth) does not match the person’s subjective gender. While transgender persons have distinct female or male genitalia and matching chromosomes, even as young children they “know” that they are in the wrong body. Transsexual is an older term that many transgender persons now reject.

Cross dressing is the act of wearing clothing typically associated with the opposite sex. Cross-dressers are not necessarily transgender, although in the strictest sense, a pre-operative transgender person presenting as the opposite sex is technically cross dressing. To use this term to refer to a transgender person, is, however, offensive.

Drag Queen is the term used for males who cross dress for the purpose of entertaining others, often lip-synching songs of popular divas at drag shows. Often, these shows are contests, attended by audiences of all types: gay, straight, lesbian and bisexual. Drag Queens often live as males in their daily life, dressing up only for shows.

Well, if - and only IF - it's about their child I can understand ANY
parent to be upset, at first. Everybody always assumes when
they have kids that come out ten fingers, ten toes, that all will
go like it's supposed to go: an "average/normal" child's life with
the "average" hickups like a few bruises, a few flues, measles,
chicken pox, a broken bone or two, acne, puppy love, broken
hearts, school problems etc. The "bigger" things always happen
to others. So yeah: I think every parent is upset - at first -
when their child experiences something less (or more, depends
on how you look at it) than average.

Kathlyn Beatty Transgender Rumor Makes Headlines...Where's the Proof?

Kathlyn Beatty is a relative unknown, despite her celebrity parents
Annette Bening and Warren Beatty. But a Perez Hilton-posted headline
is causing a lot of stir for the young girl who, as speculation reads,
supposedly wants to live life as a boy.
A post today on Perez Hilton played a guessing game as to the “celebu-
spawn” who is reportedly transgendered and living under the
name “Stephen”. The post, filed under “Not So Blind Item,” goes on to
release enticing details about the teen being pulled out of Buckley
School in Los Angeles in order to keep the alternate lifestyle under
wraps, but goes no further with any concrete details.

The comment section on the post is filled with “Are you going to leave
it with that?” and “WHO WHO?!?!” exclamations, as well as random
guesses like Rumer Willis who has been knocked about voraciously on
Perez’s site for her less-than-feminine appeal.

But so far, no confirmation has been given as to who the young teen
actually is, which leads us to speculate that the whole thing is just
intended to cause a fuss on a slow celebrity news day.

And it’s working.

For our part, and yes we’re aware we’re adding fuel to the fire, we see
this story as an opportunity to look at how far the media can – or rather,
should – go for the sake of a hot story. Is it right to conjure up a
speculative story intended to entice readers? Sure. Is it right to do it
when it could potentially cause a lot of pain and unwanted attention
for the person involved? Definitely not.

In this case, we can’t say for sure whether Perez’s story has done any
harm – after all, he didn’t name anyone in the post. But at the same time,
he didn’t offer any goods to back up the supposed claim and failed to
acknowledge that perhaps outing a transgendered teenager may not be
the apex of integrity for celebrity journalism.

It smells a little fishy to us.

Commenter Leele on Perez’s post says, “what’s up w/ everyone outing
people just b/c they’re famous? let the teen transition in peace! You
know it’s already a sensitive time for whoever it is, perez.”

We’re inclined to agree. What do you think?

Being a transgendered teenager has to be one of the most difficult things someone can go through, especially at that young age. It's not like Stephen is a celebrity, or ever went in the spotlight for attention. It was downright cruel of Perez to use Stephen's situation for his own personal amusement and gain. That kid doesn't need any negativity, and Perez making it public opens a nasty can of worms for this kid to get picked on and abused by narrowminded assholes. Leave him alone, Perez.


Jmo, but I don't think celeb's children are fair game to this sort of thing. They can't help who their parents are, and I feel especially bad if they're private people. It's mean and unfair.

You know what I think it is? Here's what it was for me, two years ago:

The general public grows up with People Magazine, and learn to disdain such "liars" as the tabloids. As they get older, they purchase an UsWeekly or InTouch and are suddenly floored by all of the "real dirt" they're getting. Tired of buying the magazines, or perhaps just even more interested now in celebrity gossip, they start to surf the web. The first thing they find? Perez Hilton. Oh, he's so funny, so sarcastic and subversive! OMG! I love him! Then a few months later as they start to branch out, they realize what an unfunny loser he really is, and find sites like Dlisted or I Don't Like You In That Way to REALLY entertain them. Once we've cycled through the entire population, Perez will finally die off and we can all throw back a few and remember way back when an old bitchy fat meth addicted thief, liar, and queen was mildly famous for fifteen seconds because he was the first one to have courage enough to slam celebrities. On that very day, I will be throwing a party such as the world has never seen.

I'm staying away from this one too. Celebrities court gossip and speculation by virtue of their chosen profession, but the media (if you can call Perez that), should lay off the kids. That is, until the kids become attention whores themselves. Why hello, Rumer Willis!
