Blind Item (Woman Basher)
This washed up black R&B singer started off in a musical group. Some men have compulsions they can’t control, like, gambling, womanizing and sports. His compulsion is: Battering women.
It’s a compulsion he can’t control. When confronted about his violence towards women, his general response is, ‘I enjoy beating women, what’s the big deal? It keeps them in line.’
While he was in the group, other members enjoyed their royalty checks, his extra income was used for settlements regarding assault cases with one stipulation; the victims were not to report the incidents to the media. It doesn’t take much to set him off: Too much seasoning on food, entering a room without knocking, interrupting him during the course of a conversation or strongly voicing your opinion.
When he first started out in the industry, he dated a aspiring model, she loaned him money, when he started making money, he repaid her by taking her on a shopping spree, she said, this is nice but I need the money I loaned you for upcoming bills, he beat her so bad, she ended up in ICU that evening. The next day, she received death threats via the telephone, saying, ‘if you press charges, you will be killed.’
This man has been involved with various races of women, they all have something in common; they were all battered by him. He has beaten every woman he has ever dated since high school. He refuses to seek treatment because he doesn’t feel he has a problem.
Hints: One of his assault cases did appear in the media, several years ago, his alleged victim claimed he got tired of beating her with his fists so he took off his shoes and continued the beating. Also, he had one solo hit.

This is making me crazy because I know who it is, but I can't remember and research hasn't turned anything up. Lots of rap, jazz and hip hop guys fit the profile, but R&B?
Smokey Robinson? Usher? That's quite a gap but I'm still working on this.

It has to be someone "washed up" though. Usher still has a career, unfortunately.

I say Bobby Brown or Quincy Jones or Ike Turner or James Brown.

Bobby Brown has had more than one solo hit, I think. Maybe.

I thought of Quincy Jones but he's never been a singer. Yeah, Usher was a dumb choice. But I wanted to show the range of who it could be.

Me too! I remember reading about this (the shoe beating) but I can't remember who it was now!

Ike Turner was my first guess but he's had more than one solo hit and wasn't part of a group. He and Tina had a band, but they were the stars.

One solo hit?
Hmmm....if it's only one, then might I suggest former New Edition singer
Johnny Gill ("Rub You The Right Way")?

...and if he doesn't see anything wrong with it,
then maybe I wouldn't see anything wrong with driving over both his
legs in a minivan until they were crushed. Try beating women from a
wheelchair, tough guy...

I googled Johnny and although he's been married, he's openly gay. He's been linked to Eddie Murphy among others. He could still be a beater, but it seems unlikely.
