    2. What is the level you are trying to get to? If it's more than 1-2 levels lighter, you'll need 30 or 40 volume peroxide. More than 3-4 levels and you can't do it with just dye, hair has to be bleached.

    3. What is the underlying pigment of your hair? You'll need to know to get the tone of the color right, and whether you're trying to make it warmer, cooler or natural. That's where ash ( which can be blue, green or violet), gold, red, copper, natural comes into play as an enhancer or a neutralizing color. An understanding of the color wheel (which applies to all color- not just hair color) is something you need.

ETA- 4. Don't keep coloring the length and ends, hair color is progressive, and it will keep getting darker. You'll end up a wreck.

ETA 2- BTW, a talented colorist doesn't always use the most expensive color there is. For years I had my colored at Oribe, now I go to Rita Hazan (by Adrian Wallace- I'd follow him anywhere), and some of the colorists at both salons use Wella Color Charm, or old fashioned Miss Clairol......which you can get in almost any beauty supply store for like $4.00 a bottle.
Excellent advice. I have naturally medium brown hair with lots of red tones. I am a light shade of blonde and I don't use bleach. I use Ion brand color in one of the 'high lift' shades called 'high lift natural blonde'. I use a 40 vol developer. I only use Ion developer because it is the most gentle and this company doesn't animal test. Their hair care products are great and very affordable, too. I get it all at Sally's.

I'm on the fence with picking a color.
I ordered the Fekkai product and it should be here tomorrow... I went with this color
    7N Dark Blonde
Frederic Fekkai Salon Color Brooke 7N Dark Blonde, $30 .
I'll have to let you guys know how it goes - mine should arrive tomorrow.

Yes, I'd be glad to report on the quantity as well as the quality... hopefully, it'll be good on both counts!

I just bought a box of L'Oreal Preference, Light Amber Brown, and ended up with dark auburn.

Not at all what I wanted and hope it fades soon.

ok girls, the Frederick Fekkai hair color is da bomb! My hair is the exact effin' color on the box, there was plenty in one box to color ALL of my hair - which is considerable. So, all in all - quality and quantity in one box. Plus, I've received nothing but compliments on it.

Thanks, Mel. Last time I bought a light golden brown from L'oreal. Hair was auburn with hints of purple. Very nasty.

I thought when you dye it at home you're supposed to bleach it first to get it as light as possible, then it comes out the color on the box?
