I washed about every other day for the first 2 weeks with an assortment of things (see list above). It didn't seem to matter what I did, it looked awful. Then, at the two week mark itself, I did a baking soda wash and it looked fantastic ... has looked good ever since even with just water washing and an occasional epsom salt rinse.
My theory (and this is not scientific) is that my scalp took that time to readjust to not needing to create so much oil, essentially it started trusting that I wasn't going to strip those natural oils. So after two weeks, when I did the thorough baking soda wash, the extra oils were washed away, but the oil production had already slowed.
Vacation is definitely the ideal time to do this. I did get some strange looks for a few days ...
