I feel so white trash for admitting this: I get my long layers done at Super Cuts. I mean, they're layers. It's hard to screw those up unless you do it yourself. I pay about $13 there every 6 weeks or so. It's cheap and looks good.

This is what I suggest, try Hair Cuttery or some other cheap salon. I save up my money so I can go to a nice salon every few months. There are some things that are worth the money, like hair and porn...

Don't feel cheap going to Super Cuts! Shoot, my mother keeps her hair short and it really only works if it's a razor cut. Not everyone can do a razor cut well and when they don't, it shows. She's been everywhere from the $40 and up places to the Great Clips which is where she goes right now. The woman has been working for 17 years and knows what she's doing.

I have cut my own hair several times. I've never screwed up in ways that others could see. I always see it and have to point it out to everyone else. The upside down head trick does work pretty good, I never did the ponytail so I can't help you there. I've sectioned it off before and then once it was all done, kind of taken the hair out at an angle and snipped in to blend it a bit. Since my hair is extremely coarse and has tons of body, wave and curl (not even of course, that would make it easy) I do have to be very careful of who cuts my hair. I just don't have the time or energy these days to do it myself anymore.
Snooky Wookums, prepare for the invasion!

I had my bf layer my hair for me a month ago, it came out alright and I didn't have to spend so much $$ on it. We seperated the hair into sections like top, middle, outer middle, middle inner middle and bottom. Than he cut the top part first and so on, after he was done he went through it again and evened the layers so it wouldn't look so choppy. It came out alot better than it did when I get my hair cut at other places, cuz they never cut my hair like I ask, only cutting the front and not trimming my hair.

That's cool! I cut my own hair now. I refuse to go to salons and pay $60-75 for something I didn't ask for and don't want. They just won't do what I want. I will say the last place I went about 16 months ago, did a very good job, and I've been following the lines and trimming about once every 6 weeks. It's been working out well and I don't feel the need to have it done professionally again. I have two pairs of scissors, one very tiny for bangs, and one larger size for the rest of my hair. I had a really good pair of German scissors many years ago (cost $30 back then-probably twice that now). I don't see any difference in how my ends look.
