Ha ha, the old classic shampoo and set. That generation is fading away now but it was the ONLY style they would even contemplate. HMQ has had exactly the same hair for the last 70 years.

I talked to my stylist about long hair past the "appropriate" age. She said as long as your hair is healthy and cut well, it usually gives you a youthful look.

The other thing is how much body your hair has. I normally wear mine straight but, when it's curly, I usually get comments about looking younger.

But you are only 25 Bella!!! I've seen the photos!

When I see my hairdresser & she asks what I want I just tell her to do what she thinks - it always looks great & at the moment she refuses to cut it much more than an inch shorter (its past my bra strap).
Days I don't need to loose the length yet.

My maternal grandmother had this for about 50 years.

I always wondered at what point you give up and go with the old lady hair. It's got to be a generational thing because my mom and her friends in their mid 60s haven't done it but the ladies just a few years older have done it for years.

I have always assumed it had to do with hot flashes. They finally say screw it, this hair is coming off.

I can see cutting it short for that reason but not the helmet hair you get washed once a week. I'm doing well to only wash mine once a day. Do these people never go to the gym or swim?

Haha, I would say no. Not the ladies I worked on. Oh, and they had to have perms to pull this look off. With the smallest rods we had. Blue, yellow and reds.

The old grannies loooove their wet sets! Just gob on the setting lotion, roll it, stick them under the dryer for 20-30 minutes, tease & shellac the hell out of it with hairspray, then next week they'll come back for the same thing. That's the only time they wash their hair for the week. No joke.
When that generation dies off, I wonder how anyone in beauty school will get their wet set quotas? lol

YES! They love their uber-tight perms too. It's insane. So funny. Your posts brought back some funny memories!

Surely the requirements have changed by now. We even had to do finger waves. Those went out in the 1920's!

But is it all squashed the next morning?

That's the art of the shampoo set. If there's enough setting lotion, back combing and hairspray, it should look okay for a few days. I think they slept with hair caps.

My mother owned a beauty salon that catered to older women for 25-30 years. Some of those women went longer than TWO WEEKS without washing their scalp. You could smell them a mile away ... mostly the cheap perfume they heavily wore to mask the unwashed body parts. Ugh. I have sympathy for you, Sprynkles!
