Looking in the mirror one day, I noticed a longish black hair under my chin, close to the neck; I assumed it was a stray hair from my head and tried to brush it off, and to my horror, realized it was actually growing there! I quickly plucked it, and haven't seen it since, but I'm always on the lookout for it to grow back. Oh, and count me in as someone who shaves my upper lip and chin about once a week...

i had a customer today at work who had a mustache. it wasn't just a little extra peach fuzz, it was black and extremely noticeable. i felt like i was being obvious in my attempts not to look at it but it's hard not to. she also had on bright red lipstick so i know she knows it's there.
I'm a hard act to follow because when I'm done, I take the microphone with me.

I saw a girl the other day who had a beard. I didn't know what to think. I was embarrassed for her just looking at it. She was very overweight and it was apparent that she didn't care very much about her appearance because of what she was wearing, so I guess she just doesn't care enough to do anything about it.

She probably has polycystic ovarian disease - a systemic metabolic disorder affecting about 10% of the female population (in the US at least) that throws your hormones out of whack. The lovely symptoms include obesity, hirsutism, infertility, cystic acne, insulin resistance/diabetes, etc. It's nasty for a lot of women and can really affect your emotional and physical quality of life including the one you mentioned. I have a very mild case of PCOD - Thank God - so I never had to deal with the worse of the symptoms. However, I did not escape the curse of hirsutism and have spent years/thousands of dollars on electrolysis to do away with facial hair. Never had a beard but had to deal with a thick black mustache and neck and chin sprouts. My face is mostly clean now but it's definitely not been fun.

    I used electrolysis.

Whether to tell someone depends on many factors: whether you think the person would care; whether the person ever asked you appearance-based questions; and whether she seems like she could possibly be aware of it.

Otherwise, I think we clue in people to their flaws when we're projecting our own standards and insecurities. Not everyone, for example, cares about perfect lipstick or brows like I do, so unless asked, I don't offer comments on something about the person's body.

What's acceptable for a female's appearance can be culturally influenced, so there's the risk of offense there.

I can tell you that guys would let me know emphatically that they hated when my muscle mass was high and my body fat was 6%, but I didn't give a shit about how THEY thought a woman should look. I only knew who I wanted to be.

I know a woman who has this, one of the most nurturing, beautiful people I know.

Oh, and I agree Aries, when I was in highschool, I was SUPER fit. Swim team, gymnastics, dance, you name it. I was svelte and had muscle definition, even my abs showed. Guys barely looked at me. When I gave up the exercise and developed boobs...BANG! All sorts of attention.

I don't have any unruly hair on my face, and if I did my mother would have pointed it out to me years ago. But I do have 1 stray hair that grows on my chest, that I have to pluck every few months.

^ I have mutant hairs. Blonde facial, arm or leg hairs, misplaced ones that, if I let them, would grow as long as head hairs.

I wax my upper lip, and I've found that waxing instead of nairing/shaving makes it grow back slower and thinner.

I've also seen women with beards and mustaches. One time, I saw a woman in her 60's with a salt and pepper mustache so thick that it would have put my Dad's 'stache to shame. It makes me wonder if men who have girlfriends/wives with this problem (who don't take care of it) feel about it.
