I must admit I've never wondered how it worked without ammonia, I don't think there's peroxide in it but there I could be wrong, well, I've no idea how it works but it does, and it really doesn't damage your hair.
And after having tried quite a few brands they'va the most natural looking reds I've found, and I really like my hair colour with that brand, it looks really natural

If it has no ammonia, it must have peroxide. Otherwise it couldn't lighten hair from black to red. They do make dyes that have no peroxide, but they can't lighten, they only deposit color.

Haircolor (not bleach, which is another story), if used properly, will not cause much damage. It's over use and abuse of haircolor that does the damage.

Bleach bath!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My chemical specialist (that's her title) has had to lift black out of my hair twice now. I know if I show up with black hair again she'll just ignore me.

Anyway, the first time she did the bleach method and it lifted great and I went a much lighter shade of red than your desired shade (bleaching will pull a ton of warmth so it's good you want to be red).

The second time she tried to use a color remover (which I had done 3 times before the first bleach job without success), these color removers can work for some and not for others. The pigments kept coming back so she bleached my hair again. I've been taking very good care of my hair and there was not any damage.

Use color remover a couple of times but if the darker color keeps coming back then get yourself to a pro.

Professional...schmofessional. I dyed red for YEARS with a pro and while the results were always fab, it also cost me $200 a pop from the Aveda salon (not worth it). I have been coloring my own hair now with Revlon Colorist 45 dark auburn and LOVE it--the conditioner is fab, the color won't fade as fast (if you use a shampoo without sulfates), it doesn't smell bad, doesn't burn my scalp in the least and it looks very natural with blue eyes and rosy cheeks. Good luck! FYI, you can buy this at drugstore.com and I've not had luck finding it at grocery stores.

If you use the remover have a friend help you really rub the hair to work the pigment molecules out. I read you used it before; damn this shit is more sulfuric stinky than perm solution.
