I used to wash my hair every other day with my favorite natural shampoo from an organic and natural shop near our area. Natural shampoo keeps my hair smooth and shiny it also leaves my hair clean and soft. I like how it works on my hair. I am also using dry shampoo during winter it keeps my hair smooth too. There's a natural dry shampoo too.

Is there some sort of method to remove the oils of the hair without using shampoos that you guys know about?
    I rinse it often though.

Twice a week. African-American hair only needs to be washed twice a week. I use Head & Shoulders Itchy Scalp Formula. Rub shea butter on my scalp a couple of times a week. Haven't put a texturizer or relaxer in my hair for 14 years.

dry shampoo, or you can dust a little bit of cornstarch at the roots and then brush it out.

Dry shampoo works very well - your hair will look and feel genuinely clean afterwards - but I don't care for the fragrance of the one I use (Oscar Blandi). It's very lemony, reminds me of a household cleaner. It's the perfect thing if you don't have time to wash your hair, though. It adds texture while soaking up the oil, making it very easy to style.

When I straighten my hair, I try to go as long as possible withouth washing. My hair is not oily so I can go about 4 days or so. When I don't straighten it, I wash it every day because it's naturally curly and just doesn't look right when I sleep on it the next day.
