I gave my mother a teeny tiny bottle of Rive Gauche for Christmas year before last - it's all but impossible to find these days. She said it reminded her of the 70s - without grimacing.

Chanel launched a younger, more modern version of Chanel No. 5. It's called Eau premiere Chanel.

I love L'air du Temps in the spring.
I have a real problem being around someone who pours it on-and I don't care what scent! That just ruins everything. Especially when you are trapped in a room with them. I just feel smothered.

I agree. What I can't beleive is how anything by Beckham or Lacoste can be considered iconic. Wouldn't something have to be a classic to be considered that? Most of that list is just trendy bullshit.

I take that back. I can see Opium, Eternity (not One, though) and Anais Anais being on there even if you don't like them per se.

Chanel No. 5 smells like cat's pee on ANYONE. That stuff is nasty. Chanel No. 19 and No. 22 are much better. But they don't get fancy high-budget commercials.

That whole list should actually be "Here's what to wear if you want to smell like a granny."

And the Beckham thing? How can it be iconic if it's only been around for, like, five seconds?

my mom never wore very costly perfumes, when i was a kid. i recall her mostly wearing avon's "odyssey" or that old drugstore perfume "wind song". i love the smell of both of those on her.

I'm probably way too young for Chanel No. 5 , but it does smell good on me. And lasts really long.

Coco and Coco Mademoiselle smell nice on me too - I'm kinda lucky with Chanel perfumes.

Dior Poison gives me headaches, and smells awful on me on the other hand. Lots of woman seem to love it though. The same can be said about Opium. When I first saw the ads for Opium I really wanted to test it, but it just doesn't work for me.

Why is the Beckham perfume included in this list? It seems out of place.

I am a Marilyn Monroe lover. I have a lot of collector items and pictures. I guess since I do, my mother in law thinks I need a bottle of Chanel No. 5 every year for Christmas. I have at least 4 bottles at home right now.

** Everyone needs to remember, that the REAL Chanel No.5 (Parfum) smells so much better than the crappy, cheap Eau de Toilette Chanel No. 5.
There really is a BIG difference.

The Eau de Toilette really does stink of moth balls.
