Default Eyeliner that smears and runs

Every day I wear eyeliner on my upper eyelid. Never on the lower. Mascara only on Christmas, birthday and New Year.

I have bought umpteen brands and kinds of waterproof eyeliner--I work outside so waterproof is de rigeur. Liquid, pencil, mechanical, and no matter what I do they always run and smear in the corners of my eyes so that after half an hour I have black smudge around my lower eye socket.

Is there some technique of application that will prevent this? Some under-product that will stop it from running and smearing? Any tips or suggestions to prevent the smeary raccoon-eye look?

Do you give it a chance to dry properly? I've recently switched to liquid eyeliner, as I find it smudges far less than eye pencil, but I keep my eye shut for a minimum of 30 seconds to let it dry properly.

It also helps if you use a base in your eyelid-either a nude eyeshadow or some light concealer, the end result is a lot better.

I use black eyeshadow... what exactly are you doing outside? I used to use a liquid eyeliner by Maybeline that has sort of a felt tip to it and it stayed on for hours and I never had a problem with it smudging. Are you rubbing your eyes?

Yep, I've tried one of those felt tip type eyeliners too and it seems to be worse than the rest of them for getting runny, especially in the inside corners of my eyes. Then it gets all over.

Waterproof because working outside in the wind and heat and snow and rain makes a mess of makeup, but I look so naked without it. I just can't be seen without my makeup, no matter what.

Black eyeshadow would seem like a worse raccoon eye problem than eyeliner? I don't want to look like somebody punched me.

Won't concealer make my eye skin look wrinkly?

Eyeshadow is all I've ever used, it stays on better, and there are SO many colours to choose from!

Buy a dollarstore paint brush, dip it in water, then run the damp brush over the shadow, then paint it onto your lash line, stays on even overnight and is WAY easier to take off with makeup remover than traditional liner.

Eyeshadow bases, keep your eyeshadow where you put it!

The above company makes a sealant. I've never used it.

That depends on how thick it is. I never used to use concealer, because I hate the 'pasted on' effect (which is why I never wear makeup), but I found a light, liquid one that works for me.

Your best bet would still be an eyeshadow base.

I'm all out of ideas. It's funny how differently products react to individual skins. Myself, I can never keep polish on. I'll paint my nails and the polish will be chipped and gross within 24 hours (at MOST), while my friend's polish stays put for up to a week (of course, she never washes dishes without gloves or is a klutz like me, but I swear, it starts to literally fall off my nails before I do anything!).

I can fix your nail polish problem right here right now: Jaffra.

Best stuff ever. I bought a random bottle of it by chance in a kiosk last year. One coat on the toenails lasts at least 2 weeks. Deep pigments, amazing stuff.

I've since been been back looking for more but alas have found none. I remember having a roommate many years ago who sold Jaffra and swore by it, but at the time I wasn't interested in cosmetics and ignored her. Jaffra is one of those product lines sold by neighborhood reps, not in stores. The nail polish is superlative.

I have one bottle of Jaffra nail polish and I covet it. One of my prize cosmetics.

Heh, I'm pretty sure this Jaffra line is not available in Greece. Or online, I gather. But thanks for the recommendation anyway.

Well I bought it in Russia!

Ya never know. But yeah, I think it's biggest distribution is California. Keep an eye out anyway.

I think Sally Hanson nail polish is junk. One day and it's gone. Absolute crap.

I loathe Seventeen nail polish. Cheap, useless crap.

Maybe try using a bit of pressed powder before you apply the liner, then go over the liner with some eyeshadow to set it. Also use some pressed powder on your lower lid to keep the liner from smearing down there. You can use the very edge of the applicator puff to keep the powder right up at the lash line if you don't want to cover the entire undereye area with it.

This is what I do to keep my liner in place.
