Question Are US women better-groomed than the Brits?

I can't tell you how often I've read this.

A British columnist will do a trip to New York and come back reporting how well-groomed women are over there and how sloppy we are in comparison.

I know nail bars and lunchtime beauty treatments started in the US.

Some of our major cities now have nail bars.

I don't know anyone who has ever popped into the hairdressers to get their hair blowdried before work. They're rarely open before 9.30am! Yet, I've heard of US women doing this.

I think our salon treatments are more expensive over here. That could be a reason.

What are your perceptions of US/UK grooming habits?

I've never been to England, so I cannot form an opinion based on personal observation. However, i would guestimate that we are a tad more superficial here if the movie industry is any indication. I enjoy British cinema in part because the actors look more 'real' than the actors in American movies where even a truck stop diner waitress is played by Jlo in full makeup and all TV doctors are perfectly groomed and camera ready at all times, even when on-call at 2am. It seems they are not as obsessed with looking perfect and it is more acceptable for actors to look like everyday people on the street, which makes the movies more believable, imo.

Aside from the 300 lb heffers that galump their way down rural supermarket aisles, I'd say the average city dweller in the US is pretty well put together.

A lot of Brit women look like they've been hit with a dumptruck. It might be carry-over from the hideous blue, green, or fuscia carpeting brit houses all seem to have. Interior design can have a really bad effect on your wardrobe

Does the average Brit really have bad teeth or is that a misconception?

Not from what I've seen.. they all seem to have SOME degree of snaggletooth. Apparently dentists are in such short supply over there (and a lot of them won't take NHS patients) that people have resorted to pulling their own teeth with pliers.

I mean come ON England. It's the 21st century for gods sake.

^^ LOL! We don't have your history of private denistry though that's gonna have to change with the NHS dental crisis. Us Brits also have a horror of looking too "false" and don't feel minor flaws have to be ironed out to look perfect. But sometimes I guess we could step it up a little.......

I'm a British citizen and have been US resident alien for a few years now so I hang out in both countries a lot and they're pretty much on par.

It just depends regionally where you are also. I know women in both places usually spend a lot on their hair, that's a given. I know that where I am based in the UK only chavs get fake nails, so acrylics have a bit of a stigma to me.. no offense to anyone that has them, but when I'm over there I'd be hard pressed to find an upscale nail bar.

Oh and I didn't know what a "blow out" was until femme fatale started the 'whats your daily getting ready routine' thread..comedy gold that was..

I have not been there, but especially Southern US girls are groomed from birth to be-well-groomed. It is superficial,I guess. We spend time and money on (as Mother says) being well put together.Doesn't matter what your budget is-there are plenty of improvements for free-just takes time.
I picture our English Rose people here-like Honey & Novice,Moog-to have superior dewy skin, more flawless than not and lovely shiny hair from the climate and being outdoors. Our English people are great natural beauties, of that I am sure.

Well, I don't think it's right to say that Brits aren't as well groomed as Americans. I'm sure it depends on the areas of each place.

Just like it annoys me to hear people say how Americans are ALL fat when I see pictures of fatties all over the damn world....

I'm Southern and only the rich/upper middle class girls are taught to be well-groomed. The lower classes eat crap, get fat early, wear horrible clothes, have horrible haircuts, and don't look like they wash too often. Of course, except for the washing thing, that's driven by socio-economic factors. When you can only afford Walmart clothes and can't afford fresh fruits/veggies/meats, you will generally look like crap.

I was grocery shopping (at Walmart!) today and Golden Delicious apples are $1.78/lb. I weighed 2 apples and they were over a pound. So 2 apples would've cost me over $2. I bought a different kind of apple that was $1.23/lb, but still. It is expensive to eat healthy.

I'd actually read the term somewhere before, but I'm so glad FF posted it - the hilarity that ensued was soooo worth it
