    Default Layering your own hair

Has anyone ever layerd their own hair? If so, how? I refuse to pay $75 for a haircut, I live in the city. Anyhow, cheapness aside, I have really long hair and want to layer it myself. I read that if you put it in a high ponytail and cut across the ends, it will layer your hair. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't go near my hair with a pair of scissors.

Don't! Please find a hairsylist outside the city if need be! It might not fall right if you do it yourself!

I don't have a style right now. It's long, past my bra strap. Some layers through out, no bangs. I normally wear it in a ponytail or in a bun. I wouldn't try it if I had a style or short hair. I just want to see if anyone other brave, or silly soul has tried this.

You'll regret it and spend way more than $75 having the damage put right including perhaps having it all cut off. Cutting hair isn't as easy as it looks.

    Lol at your sig SYP.

I cut my own hair, but I like it to look kind of not too perfect, suits me that way.

I agree if you want nice hair, you might want to go salon.

Since your hair is very long you could try layering it yourself and if it doesn't work out well, a salon would still have plenty of hair left to work with.

yeah i agree with everyone here, just go to a salon. Since you have long hair you could probably do with a good trim as well. Just be firm with the hairdresser about how short the shortest layer will be and don't be afraid to threaten to remove her left kidney with a spoon if she cuts it any shorter.

I do my own, with my hubby's help sometimes. It took some practice, but I find it simple now. I don't do a ton of layers, but enough to give it some bounce. If I have him do it, he does the back (clip the upper layers up and start from the bottom - and yes, it took him a while to understand what "layers" were), and I do the sides/front. If I do it by myself, I flip my head and do it upside down, from the bottom layer up, if that makes sense (like when you blowdry upside down). I don't cut bluntly across, but sort of attack the ends "vertically", in small snips, which is what stylists have always done on me. I use good hair scissors, and have been doing this for about a year now (saved SO much money).

So it can be done, but these other posters aren't wrong, hehe. It definitely takes some work and some practice, it's easy to screw up and it won't necessarily be a fast process. For me, it was worth learning though, because I've never found a cheap hairstylist that does a good job, and the money for a pricier one was starting to hurt.

^^^^ Ignore her. She's a newlywed and her husband is still absolutely perfect.
